Hunter Valley Wine

Hunter Valley is the best known region within the state of New South Wales in Australia. The upper and lower areas surround the Hunter River, with most vineyards in the south part in the foothills of the Brokenback Range.

It is credited with being the country’s oldest region, very close to Sydney, with vines brought over from Europe and planted in the 1820s. James Busby, known as the “Father of Australian Wine” brought over some of the first plantings, with vines that still exist thanks to the area’s successful dodging of Phylloxera which otherwise devastated Europe and other parts of the country.

The region is mostly hot and wet with ample cloud cover and cool breezes from the ocean balancing it out. Semillon is the pride of Hunter Valley, world renown for its distinct, grassiness when young with evolving caramel and nutty flavors that benefit from long aging.

Oaked Chardonnay is also very popular here. Shiraz is the star red with a range of concentrated styles from Read more »

  • Tyrrell's Brokenback Shiraz 2009

Something of a pruney nose, but, also, an unfortunate sulphur thing that does not blow off. Very tart on entry. Some raisiny fruit. Then at the rear palate that sulphur thing, Not a terribly sophisticated wine. I'm actually OK with the tartness, but there is no way I could recommend this wine. Read More

  • Interestingly, found a Montebello edged out a Dunn from the same mature vintage recently, though both could've been WOTN, with very tough competition from the Musigny. Two meals, one seafood and white, the 2nd red meat and red wine. Every single bottle gets my *buy* recommendation. Interestingly, was down in the tropics just north of the equator... Read More

  • Mcwilliam's Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2007

This well-priced aged, oaked Semillon from the Hunter Valley in NSW is in an older style, but remains its delicious self; for an 8-year old wine, there is a bright, wildflower nose with a hint of dandelion - very inviting. On the palate we receive a hefty dose of lanolin and wood (but not of the dull variety) with pineapple, kiwi, grapefruit. ... Read More

  • Okay, getting back to the topic at hand, in effect the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is the other side of those mountains.  Arroyo Seco is basically due east of Big Sur.  And there's San Antonio Valley a little further south.  (Pierce Family, whom I have touted on the "Completely Different" thread, are down there.)  Here's a nice map: http://wine.ap...
