New South Wales Wine

New South Wales is state and wine-producing region within the Federal Commonwealth of Australia, and one of the first to be populated with and planted by European settlers. It boasts a wide array of regions and climates from the Shoal Haven coast to high altitude in the Great Dividing Range to warm inland along the Murrambidgee and Murray rivers (a.k.a. the “Big Rivers”) to cooler climates in the Swan Hill and Murray Darling, with each section excelling in their own varietals and styles.

Hunter Valley is the best known region in the state, regarded for its prized Semillon that was originally planted in the 1820s by James Busby, who is credited with being the “Father of Australian Wine.”

  • The Accomplice Shiraz 2010

    Snoothrank:

The Accomplice comes from De Bortoli winemakers in Australia. It's a good example of a typical Australian shiraz: spicy and a splash of freshness. And it's also a nicely priced wine (about 5,-). I tasted the 2010 and 2012 vintage. The 2012 is not as convincing as the 2010, which was one of my favorites for a long time. Nice to drink on an eveni... Read More

  • Tyrrell's Wines Old Winery Verdelho 2012

    Snoothrank:

Clear but incredibly pale yellow in the glass. Interesting, it almost looks like water. Herbal, vegetative nose reminds me more of a sauvignon blanc. Very refreshing on the palate--initially a melon flavor but then lot's of lemon. Excellent acid gives it the refreshing quality. US$11.69 at Total WIne. Read More
