Barossa Valley Wine

With a rich history dating back to 1847, a profound and unique Silesian (German) influence, the Barossa Valley is one of the most famous wine regions of South Australia and, indeed, Australia. The region is now rightly asserting not only its importance to the wine industry but the inestimable value of its storehouse of century-old vines and historic wineries. The twists and turns of the Barossa Valley are at times as clearly defined as those of the world famous Napa Valley in California. At other times they disappear into a series of rolling hills and transverse valleys, which can easily disorient as well as charm the first time visitor. In consequence, site, slope and aspect all vary widely. The climate of the region has often been unfairly characterised as very warm but, in fact, in its lower parts it is only moderately so and at higher altitudes quite cool, as indicated by the Williamstown details given below. In fact, as John Gladstones has pointed out, its biologically effective temperature Read more »

  • Schild Estate Shiraz Barossa Valley 2011

This has aged really well. After a slight dumb stage this really turned up the heat. Mostly red fruits (oddly) with a little blueberry thrown in, excellent mnerality, pepper and delicious acidity with tannic support to give a generous mouthfeel and lengthy aftertaste. Drink or hold for up to more 18 months - Paul 90 points Read More

  • Torbreck "Cuvee Juveniles" Barossa Valley 2011

Wonderful...and it lasted in the cellar without degrading at all. Blueberries, red berry fruit, pepper with a trace of mocha thrown in for good measure. The herbal side is generous, as is the opening floral component. Mild tannins and great minerality and acidity make this an enjoyable "reach for another" bottle of wine - drink now - Paul 90 points Read More

  • Tait Barossa Valley "The Ball Buster" Smc 2012

Big wine - when I first opened it to breath it took the room by storm. Big blackberries, red plum and blueberries, chocolate, pepper on the nose lead to chewy tannins and well balanced acidity force their way to a medium long aftertaste that is juicy qand alluring. Could stand another 12 months cellaring then drink. Paul 90 points Read More

  • DM - as you know, it's originally from Spain in Aragon. It was the most ... some warm places, like the Barossa Valley, which incidentally has the oldest Garnacha grapevines in the world, it has a strawberry/raspberry fruitiness that's just delicious. Not particularly tannic, good on its own or in a blend, usually GSM but not always. Not necess... Read More
