Barossa Valley Wine

With a rich history dating back to 1847, a profound and unique Silesian (German) influence, the Barossa Valley is one of the most famous wine regions of South Australia and, indeed, Australia. The region is now rightly asserting not only its importance to the wine industry but the inestimable value of its storehouse of century-old vines and historic wineries. The twists and turns of the Barossa Valley are at times as clearly defined as those of the world famous Napa Valley in California. At other times they disappear into a series of rolling hills and transverse valleys, which can easily disorient as well as charm the first time visitor. In consequence, site, slope and aspect all vary widely. The climate of the region has often been unfairly characterised as very warm but, in fact, in its lower parts it is only moderately so and at higher altitudes quite cool, as indicated by the Williamstown details given below. In fact, as John Gladstones has pointed out, its biologically effective temperature Read more »

  • Yalumba Cabernet-Shiraz Blend Eden Valley the Reserve 2004

    Snoothrank:

Big and powerful with wonderful fresh fruit aromas set against a backdrop of lightly spicy and used oak. On the palate this is both chewy and fresh with acids that seem a bit high all things considered. Theres lovely balance and purity to the black currant fruit on the palate which shows a little minty quality on the back end. The finish is nice... Read More

  • Yalumba the Signature Cabernet-Shiraz Blend Barossa Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

So smoky on the nose with a moderate dose of toasty oak spice layered under some leafy and bright black currant fruit. On entry this is really attractive with brilliant red and black fruits that have a slight jammy edge to them yet they remain clear and bright on the palate. This is so finely polished but still with cut and great clarity in the m... Read More

  • Yalumba Shiraz Barossa Valley the Octavius 2006

    Snoothrank:

Leathery and a bit of animal greets the nose though in a very clean and pure way developing complex and deep aromas of plum and crushed berries over a base of wood spice. One gets the sensation of a bit of over-ripeness in the mouth, though this shows nicely judged tannins supporting blue fruit that explodes on the mid-palate with, gorgeous inne... Read More

  • Pewsey Vale Riesling Eden Valley the Contours 2003

    Snoothrank:

People dont get the brilliance of these dry rieslings because they are so rarely encountered with this sort of age on them. Here we have an example with perfect provenance, winery direct in fact. Smoky on the nose with an almost custardy edge to the core of crabapple that is framed by subtle honey and green tea notes. On entry this remains youth... Read More
