Barossa Valley Wine

With a rich history dating back to 1847, a profound and unique Silesian (German) influence, the Barossa Valley is one of the most famous wine regions of South Australia and, indeed, Australia. The twists and turns of the Barossa Valley are at times as clearly defined as those of the world famous Napa Valley in California. At other times they disappear into a series of rolling hills and transverse valleys, which can easily disorient as well as charm the first time visitor. In consequence, site, slope and aspect all vary widely. The climate of the region has often been unfairly characterised as very warm but, in fact, in its lower parts it is only moderately so and at higher altitudes quite cool, as indicated by the Williamstown details given below. In fact, as John Gladstones has pointed out, its biologically effective temperature Read more »

Barossa Valley on Snooth

  • Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling Eden Valley Dry Riesling 2012

    Snoothrank:

Quite perfumed on the nose, with aromas of apple blossoms, dry tree bark, quince and limes. While painfully young, this shows great cut in the mouth with a nice edge of richness, though it remains medium to light bodied. There's a lovely rush of sour apple, lime and raw quince flavors on the palate, with gentle floral accents and a hint of spice ... Read More

  • Yalumba Shiraz Blend Y Series Shiraz/Viognier 2009

    Snoothrank:

Dark and spicy with an almost camphor-like aspect to the black pepper top note to the blueberry and blackberry fruit. Air brings out the classic apricot and floral aromas of Viognier which are sweet and well-integrated here. This is a little tight on entry but shows fine balance with an early rush of blueberry and blackberry fruit followed by l... Read More

  • Torbreck Red Rhone Blend Barossa Valley the Steading 2009

    Snoothrank:

This deep ruby-colored wine has a rich and complex nose of black truffle, pink pepper, sweet licorice and dried herbs . This is a juicy, fresh wine, with flavors of cherry, red plum, cedar and a hint of leather and thyme in the lifted finish. The tannins are ripe and supple and the wine is ready to drink now, though I believe it may gain some co... Read More

Bright red in color with youthful crimson and a seductive blend of dark cherries, cocoa, subtle oak, and earthy notes on the nose. • Charles Melton Red Rhone Blend Barossa Valley Nine Popes 2009

    Snoothrank:

A big wine, deep purple in color, with a great tannic structure and lifted freshness. It shows some herbaceous characteristics (mint, dried herbs) as well as lots of juicy red and black fruit as well as a little vanilla and coconut from the oak. The tannins are chewy and the finish a little earthy with cocoa notes. I believe that with age, the ... Read More
