Situated at the foot of the Brindabella Mountains, the tranquil rural countryside forming the Canberra District is a cool climate wine region and compares with Bordeaux in France. Despite covering a relatively small area, it boasts an extraordinary read more...array of micro-climates due to its unique geography and inland location. The region's vineyards are planted on the hills around Canberra at altitudes from 500m to 900m above sea level, providing unique micro-climates and individualistic wines.

Several small wineries, including the extraordinary Clonakilla, are producing wines that are regularly earning top ratings by the best wine critics in Australia and overseas.

The region boasted a thriving wine industry 100 years ago, which disappeared at the turn of the century. In the early 1970's winegrowing was re-established and now is home to 140 vineyards with more than 30 boutique cellar doors. The wineries are small and intimate providing an original interactive visitor experience. Visitors are often afforded the privilege of being served by the winemaker providing an opportunity to learn first hand the passion and expertise required to create authentic, hand crafted cool climate wines.

Canberra District wines deliver unique qualities derived from an environment like no other in Australia. The altitude, climate, soils, grapes and the people combine to produce liquid geography - wine with uniqueness, character and authenticity.

The district is producing flavoursome clean acid whites, full flavoured reds and limited quantities of port, sherry, muscat and mead. The wineries are small, friendly, individual enterprises which welcome visitors to taste, discuss and buy the wines from the winemaker at the cellar door.    (hide)

Smells like caramel, pepper and acetone. It has a smooth flavor, and doesn't have the peppery bite of some shiraz.
