Situated at the foot of the Brindabella Mountains, the tranquil rural countryside forming the Canberra District is a cool climate wine region and compares with Bordeaux in France. Despite covering a relatively small area, it boasts an extraordinary array of micro-climates due to its unique geography and inland location. The region's vineyards are planted on the hills around Canberra at altitudes from 500m to 900m above sea level, providing unique micro-climates and individualistic wines. Several small wineries, including the extraordinary Clonakilla, are producing wines that are regularly earning top ratings by the best wine critics in Australia and overseas. The region boasted a thriving wine industry 100 years ago, which disappeared at the turn of the century.
