Cafayate, the most famous region within the Salta in Argentina, is situated within the Calchaquies Valley. The region is not only known for its exceptional wines produced in high-altitude locales, but also the spectacular mountain views that surround it and attract visitors. Grape-growing benefits from warm days and cool nights, plus melting runoff from the mountains and a decent amount of rainfall. Bordeaux oenologist  Michel Rolland is credited for bringing the spotlight to the region and promoting quality viticulture within it.

Malbec is of course, the shining star of reds, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tannat. Whites are produced most commonly with Torrontes, known for its perfumed aroma, fruity palette and refreshing, balanced acidity. Chardonnay is also grown here.

Cafayate on Snooth

  • Doña Paula Torrontés Cafayate Estate 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deep golden color and mild notes of lychee and mango in the bouquet herald a restrained wine with a delightfully clean finish; this is the varietal at its most dignified. Open at least half an hour before serving. (AV 89, http://argovino.com/?p=181) Read More

  • Michel Torino Altimus 2010

    Snoothrank:

The nose showed intense dark fruits, spiced cookie and rosemary with an undercurrent of dusty stone and minerals. On the palate this was rich yet detailed and structured with flavors of ripe, dark fruits followed by hints of herbs and cranberry carrying through the cheek-puckering finish. The balance of ripe fruit and structure here is stunning ... Read More

  • Hermanos Valle de Cafayate Torrontes 2011

    Snoothrank:

I had this as part of a Argentinian tasting at a local wine store. This also had good notes of lemon and lime (as compared to Norton Torrontes 2010) although this was fuller and sweeter than the last. There was an after taste that was a tad on the bitter side. For more on the tasting, please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/08/sd-wine-co-... Read More

  • Hermanos Salta 2010

    Snoothrank:

I had this as part of a Argentinian tasting at a local wine store.Made from 70% Malbec 30% Tannat. This had a darker purple hue than the ones tasted so far. It has a fruit jammy smell and had notes of spices. It was light and not flavorful, lacking in fruits. For more on the tasting, please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/08/sd-wine-co...
