Valle de Uco is a wine region within Mendoza, all part of the Cuyo province in Argentina. Much of the wine-growing area sits at high altitude locations at the foot of the Andes mountains. The high-set vineyards benefit from hot days and cool nights, allowing full grape ripeness and complexity without too much alcohol. The Tunuyan river flows throughout the valley down from the Andes, providing irrigation to the vineyards. Although with so little rain in the area, this is still not sufficient and manufactured irrigation technology is widely practiced.

It is here that some of the top names in Bordeaux have set up shop, such as Baron Edmond Rothschild, Francois Lurton and Michel Rolland. Laurent Dassault recently partnered with Benjamin Rothschild here to form the DiamAndes wine conglomerate with the Bonnie family.

Much of the wines from the Uco are synonymous with quality, thanks to modern production methods and very careful attention to detail. Top grapes are Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Read more »

  • Rutini Malbec 2009

In Argentina, Rutini is among the most prestigious widely available brands, and this wine offers a few hints why. The nose is a mix of orange marmelade and tire rubber; in the mouth, its somewhat square but full of characteristic malbec berry-cherry flavor. A little grainy, but a few years of age might sort that out. (AV 87, Read More

  • Tikal Malbec Amorio Mendoza Argentina 2009

  • Catena Alta Chardonnay 2010

A finely structured wine, if not generous. The dark honey color is certainly appealing, as is the mix of floral and toasted flavors conveyed to both nose and mouth (where they are joined by touches of anise), but the overall character is still rather austere. (AV 88, Read More

  • Achával-Ferrer Red Bordeaux Blend Cabernet Merlot Malbec 2010

Classic malbec with a nose of burnt matches and ink, then bright flavors with a touch of the acrid aromas continuing in the mouth and into the finish. A great choice for malbec purists, and excellent with strong cheeses. (AV 87, Read More
