Valle de Uco is a wine region within Mendoza, all part of the Cuyo province in Argentina. Much of the wine-growing area sits at high altitude locations at the foot of the Andes mountains. The high-set vineyards benefit from hot days and cool nights, allowing full grape ripeness and complexity without too much alcohol. The Tunuyan river flows throughout the valley down from the Andes, providing irrigation to the vineyards. Although with so little rain in the area, this is still not sufficient and manufactured irrigation technology is widely practiced.

It is here that some of the top names in Bordeaux have set up shop, such as Baron Edmond Rothschild, Francois Lurton and Michel Rolland. Laurent Dassault recently partnered with Benjamin Rothschild here to form the DiamAndes wine conglomerate with the Bonnie family.

Much of the wines from the Uco are synonymous with quality, thanks to modern production methods and very careful attention to detail. Top grapes are Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Read more »

  • Rutini Red Blend la Consulta Cabernet Malbec 2007

This stained my lips and teeth so purple that when I was giving my daughter a bath she asked me why lips were brown. Besides that wonderful anecdote, there isn't much to say here. Hard to tell it apart from all of the other Mendoza malbecs, which is not a bad thing. Mendoza malbecs are delicioso. Read More

  • Altocedro Malbec la Consulta Reserva 2007

Big, upfront fruit on the nose, with cherry dominating. Scents of raisin, blueberry, raspberry, licorice, coffee, chocolate, and forest floor moss mix fleetingly in the cherry breeze, resulting in a smooth array of pleasant aromas. The palate opens like biting on tea bags impregnated with rich red fruits, making the taste harsh at first on the... Read More

  • Trivento Shiraz Blend Shiraz Malbec 2005

The nose is uneventful at opening, and what scents present themselves are gone like the wind in no time at all. After a time in the glass, however, wood notes appear, both cedar and oak, then florals, fruits, spices and greens emerge, including lavender, plum, raspberry, wild dewberry, blueberry, cinnamon, anise, fresh green grass, and rose.
