San Rafael is a wine producing region within Mendoza, all part of the Cuyo region in Argentina. It is located some distance from the Andes than more famous parts of the Mendoza such as Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu. But the grapes still benefit from irrigation brought by snowy mountain runoff and temperature protection.
The region has always been known for being a wine-making powerhouse. But the trend toward producing international varietals and modern oenology never really took off here since foreign wine-makers are more attracted to the higher altitude locations in regions further north. Still, the wines produced here can be of good quality and reasonable price.
The main reds produced are Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The whites are made from Chardonnay and Semillon.

  • Valentin Bianchi Merlot Particular 2006

Francisco Martinez and Facundo Pereira offer a wondrous merlot with a complex bouquet of wildflowers. It has a touch of Bordeaux-style blending that offers a succession of new flavors with every flick around the tongue, from gooseberry jam to crushed blackberries, all phased in neatly and elegantly. Its a model for structuring a wine thats prima... Read More
