San Rafael Wine

San Rafael is a wine producing region within Mendoza, all part of the Cuyo region in Argentina. It is located some distance from the Andes than more famous parts of the Mendoza such as Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu. But the grapes still benefit from irrigation brought by snowy mountain runoff and temperature protection.
The region has always been known for being a wine-making powerhouse. But the trend toward producing international varietals and modern oenology never really took off here since foreign wine-makers are more attracted to the higher altitude locations in regions further north. Still, the wines produced here can be of good quality and reasonable price.
The main reds produced are Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The whites are made from Chardonnay and Semillon.

Had this one with dinner last evening. After getting past the 'barnyard' aromas, the wine was just fine - tight and dry with bright tannins and acidity. Loads of earth and spice and near ripe fruit. Read More
