Agrelo is a small wine region within Mendoza in the Cuyo province of Argentina. It centers around the town of the same name. It is situated at the Mendoza river at the foot of the Andes. Vineyards are at high elevations, which ensures optimal sun exposure and grape acid/sugar balance. The grape varietals produced are the typical popular Mendoza varietals such as Torontes, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for whites. Reds consist of Bonarda, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Many of the wineries here are boutique operations focused on quality viticulture.

Agrelo on Snooth

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Alta Zapata Vineyard 2008

    Snoothrank:

A class act, from the gorgeous violet shades in the glass, to the bouquet that alternates between orange blossoms and black cherry, through the subtle and velvety feel in the mouth, through to the unexpectedly sweet and jammy finish. This is not a barnburner cabernet, but its a smooth operator that would accompany subtly flavored meats with styl... Read More

  • Susana Balbo Crios Rose of Malbec Agrelo Mendoza 2011

    Snoothrank:

The faint bouquet of nectarine doesnt give much away, but the bright red color does a luscious wine with attractive sweetness if not much structure follows, with lively strawberry notes towards the end, and theres that nectarine tang again. (AV 87, http://argovino.com/?p=673) Read More

  • Susana Balbo Crios de Susana Balbo Rose of Malbec Agrelo Mendoza 2010

    Snoothrank:

A deceptively powerful fruit bomb with a peach-pink color, cherry nose, and mouthful of strawberry jam, every bit as delicious as a good Cotes-de-Provence. (AV 87, http://argovino.com/?p=222) Read More

  • Chakana Malbec Agrelo Estate Selection 2010

    Snoothrank:

Take a deep inhale of the bouquet and youre transported to a pine forest. In the mouth, the wine has a nice touch of strawberry jam and a fairly quick, clean finish. (AV 85, http://argovino.com/?p=467) Read More

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Agrelo 2010

    Snoothrank:

What a bouquet! Its beguiling, with endless wafts of cut flowers and ripe red fruit. The rest of the experience is not quite at the same level an unctuous note of black cherry, but not enough depth to sustain it. Still a worthy malbec, but not up to the standard of the 2009 edition. • Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

    Snoothrank:

A deep bouquet of ink and green plum telegraphs the dark, almost burnt flavor of the wine, rounded out by touches of nutmeg and clove. Its still a bit tannic and lacks some depth after the first few sips, but it could develop into a profound cabernet dominated by sturdy black currant. (AV 86, http://argovino.com/?p=730) Read More

  • Casarena Chardonnay 505 2012

    Snoothrank:

A 2012 Chardonnay from Mendoza, Argentina. Yellow straw in color. Fruit hints of apple and peach with a hint of honey. It has a mid-finish on the palette and crisp acidity. Best served chilled to 52 degrees, and served with a cold pasta salad. Read More

  • Urraca Familia Langley Reserva 2005

    Snoothrank:

This comes in a giant bottle. Dense and brooding on the nose with clay soil tones, black fruit, braised herbs, and nutty oak. While eight years old, this is still tight and just a pup. The balance here is great, this is a large scale wine that manages to feel quite weightless in the mouth. There's tons of tannin here, but they are balanced by ri... Read More
