Agrelo is a small wine region within Mendoza in the Cuyo province of Argentina. It centers around the town of the same name. It is situated at the Mendoza river at the foot of the Andes. Vineyards are at high elevations, which ensures optimal sun exposure and grape acid/sugar balance. The grape varietals produced are the typical popular Mendoza varietals such as Torontes, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for whites. Reds consist of Bonarda, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Many of the wineries here are boutique operations focused on quality viticulture.

  • Finca Decero Petit Verdot Agrelo Remolinos Vineyard 2009

When first poored into decanter, smelled like freshly baked blackberry cobbler. After 1 hour decant, smell of fruit was more subtle, accompanied by some earthiness. On the palate, core of subdued fruit along with minerals, spices, forest floor and cigar box. Medium to full bodied, definitely not over-extracted. The smokey, peppery, spicey finish... Read More

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Agrelo 2010

The Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2008 shows a saturated dark violet color; the nose offers cassis, mocha and clove, along with a strong suggestion of soil tones. It combines density and sweetness on the one hand, with gripping, lightly saline flavors of tobacco, dark berries, spices and minerals; a palate-staining finish dominated by sweet bla... Read More

  • Bodegas Y Viñedos Hugo Y Eduardo Pulenta Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Estate 2008

A lighter and less concentrated selection, bucking the trend for Mendoza cabernet, this wine begins with a vegetal bouquet of white asparagus and bell pepper. In the mouth it's smooth, tart, and clean, with sweet apple flavors riding on red currants - the product of some very specific winemaking choices, and an intriguing alternative to blockbus... • Chakana Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Ever stick your nose in a glass only to be confronted with rich tomato sauce - the kind some folks call gravy - with hints of seafood? Frutti di mare in a glass, anyone? These uncanny aromas continue, if modestly, in the mouth, where those tomatoes turn into sweet jam and the nautical note just lingers. You can guess the food pairings already fo... Read More

  • Finca Decero Malbec Agrelo Remolinos Vineyard 2010

The epitome of Mendoza malbec, from the acrid coffee-and-ink nose to the dark plum flavor buoyed by a welcome sweetness and then dispatched with just enough acid. No fruit bombs here, just malbec done right. (AV 91, Read More

  • Bodega Ruca Malén Cabernet Sauvignon Kinien 2007

The bouquet is bright a fruity with a tiny hint of clove, and these flavors continue into the wine itself, which is grapier than your average malbec but a little chalky around the edges. (AV 85, Read More

  • Susana Balbo Signature Malbec Unspecified Argentina Argentina Mendoza Malbec Red Bottle-New Stock 2009

Begins with malbecs usual magic-marker ink and an underlying hint of musk, but the flavor itself is quite a contrast light and tart, with not much structure yet enough fruit to satisfy. (AV 85, Read More

  • Susana Balbo Red Bordeaux Blend Agrelo Brioso 2005

Showing a comely touch of age in the color, the bouquet is a wonderful mix of smoke, cedar, and stone fruits; in the mouth, it reveals layers of flavor, getting deeper and sweeter towards a clean finish. (AV 92, Read More
