Lujan de Cuyo is a subregion of Mendoza, both part of the larger Cuyo wine region in Argentina. It is located south of Mendoza city, across the river of the same name. Most of the vineyards surround the river, providing natural irrigation for the alluvial (sand over clay) soil. This is considered the star region of Mendoza where many of the country’s top internationally selling wineries are located. It became Argentina’s first official appellation in 1993.

Malbec is the main grape grown, and has seen a steady increase in quality over the years, with investments in modern wine-making equipment and techniques to maximize its potential. Cabernet Sauvignon is also widely successful in blends and varietal releases. Torrontes is the main white grape, known for its perfumed aroma, fruity flavor and refreshing acidity. Chardonnay is also grown.

  • Bodega Norton Privada 2009

    Snoothrank:

The robe (appearance) of this wine is darker than Kirsch-like opaque red and non-sanguine, but with an inviting scent of mint, autumnal leaves (North of 40), Himalayan Blackberry we proceed... and upon entry, this wine is full of generic red fruit and catnip (mint) with a medium to long finish and extant tannin. A great food wine that can last ... Read More

  • Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Agrelo 2010

    Snoothrank:

The Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2008 shows a saturated dark violet color; the nose offers cassis, mocha and clove, along with a strong suggestion of soil tones. It combines density and sweetness on the one hand, with gripping, lightly saline flavors of tobacco, dark berries, spices and minerals; a palate-staining finish dominated by sweet bla... Read More

  • Bodegas Y Viñedos Hugo Y Eduardo Pulenta Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Estate 2008

    Snoothrank:

A lighter and less concentrated selection, bucking the trend for Mendoza cabernet, this wine begins with a vegetal bouquet of white asparagus and bell pepper. In the mouth it's smooth, tart, and clean, with sweet apple flavors riding on red currants - the product of some very specific winemaking choices, and an intriguing alternative to blockbus... • Chakana Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

    Snoothrank:

Ever stick your nose in a glass only to be confronted with rich tomato sauce - the kind some folks call gravy - with hints of seafood? Frutti di mare in a glass, anyone? These uncanny aromas continue, if modestly, in the mouth, where those tomatoes turn into sweet jam and the nautical note just lingers. You can guess the food pairings already fo... Read More

  • Fabre Montmayou Merlot Reserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

A deep crimson merlot from 30-year old vines that cuts to the chase, with a powerful and concentrated stream of prune and the faintest touch of mango. Its too hot to be very complex or refined, but certainly worth drinking. A good choice for a salt-crusted steak. (AV 88, http://argovino.com/?p=1244) Read More
