Is it typical for Syrah wines to have a higher alcohol percentage?

In our recent Syrah tastings here for #GTiSyrah, I have noticed that several of our selected wines have an alcohol concentration of 15% or more. I always thought of Zin to be the highest in alcohol, and was surprised to see this level on Syrah wines. Is this common?

  • 133619janinelrobinson I think it has to do with vintage: the hotter the vintage, the higher the alcohol. France had a couple of hot vintages in the last few years; not sure about the US west coast. I think 13.5 is more typical. Not an expert, though, so look forward to reading other responses.
