I think the heat of Siciliy tends to cook out some of the Muscattiness of the wines. I enjoy them for what they are, in particular the dessert styled wines, but that candied lemon, and more frequently dried or singed lemon peel, is pretty much all I get from many as well.

Asparagus equals Sauvignon Blanc for me; the acidity would cut through the cream component and should be Ok with the cumin and salsa too. Yep, Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand) would be my choice.
