"I think you'll find that as the 2000 Matures it will become more full bodied for some time. Once the initial flush of youth has passed Nebbiolo tends to get tight and lean until the structure relaxes allwong the wine to become more expansive and mouth filling.

I think you can safely expect the wine to show this full bodied richness over at least the next 5 years or so.

Welcome"

"With the 2000, which is my baby so to speak, would you say that as I wait it will become less full bodied. I really do love the boldness of la spinetta's barbaresco so I kind of dont want to lose that.

Thanks"

"Hey Rob,

The 2000 will fulfill it's promise sooner, as it's from a more precocious vintage but I would have no qualms seeing both of these through another decade or so in the cellar.

The Gaja wines are famous for the longevity but they do sacrifice early approachability. As a general rule of thumb well made Barbaresco has a 20 year life, for Barolo make it 30.

Of course there are many people who prefer the wines young and an equally large number who prefer them aged so YMMV as they say!

In any event I am sure you have two bottles to look forward to.

Best

Greg

"Hey Greg,

Long time no talk. I had a question and thought you might have a good answer.

I have two great bottles in my cellar. A 2000 La Spinetta Barbaresco Gallina and a 2001 Barbaresco Starderi. Wine spectator and other sites will tell you to drink the 2001 bottle in 2007 or beyond and to drink the 2000 Gallina in 2009. I have tasted both of these bottles already and they are fantastic. The question is, how long can I safely age them? I know with Gaja Barbarescos you can age them 20-30 years before them truly come to full potential. Can I say the same for La Spinetta?

Hope you are well,

Rob"

What about putting down a Ridge 2004 Santa Cruz Cab? Make sense?
