Philip reviewed Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2007. (3/5)

Soft grassy nose leading to a very nice honied sauvignon blanc. The finish was sharp and abrupt, and not in keeping with the actual taste.

Philip reviewed Hess Chardonnay Select Monterey 2008. (3/5)

Sharp grassy nose with linoleum and vanilla. In the mouth the wine is round with buttery notes and red apple fruits. The finish is fruitier and sweeter with pineapple, gooseberry and mango flavors.

Dense raspberry and cherry notes with a soft, sweet earthiness and some bacon fat flavors. There's a hint of pine needles in the attack, but the wine broadens quickly to a fruity, rich, and...

I thought it has only ever been one color - greenish (i'm color blind, but it looks greenish to me)

"And I did notice that there were a lot of posts under that article from avatars with that as their first or second posting. Combined with that post with the very quick and precise recommendations about retailers in the UK and Japan, the impression was clear that some people in the local industry were, indeed, 'rallying the troops.'"

"Yep, I mentioned some months ago in that GrandCru thread that some attention on the area would be good. Looks like the industry there is feeling a little underappreciated. Certainly better value than Napa/Sonoma, which is well popular in this economy, and the wines I mention are just plain good, though some of those mentioned in other posts aren't great, IMO. I haven't tasted enough of them, though, and look forward to imbibing more. Certainly a better lake of wines from there than from, say, N.Z.

One of the costs of Snooth's increased exposure these days, I suppose. But should be fine if you follow up with something on Oregon. Then Washington, too, I would think. Probably best to separate the two since there's so much to cover these days. Shouldn't be all that difficult to do in a way that doesn't look like you've been browbeaten into it...."

"Philip, when I saw your post about having Oregon vintners send you samples, I thought of that movie, Bottle Shock, I think? Is that a big concern? Myself, I had Airlie ship a case of Pinot, Riesling, and Muller Thurgau to meet me in Ohio (my native state) for vacation a couple of years ago. I didn't notice any ill effects, but that may just be my only-mildly-educated palate. What are your thoughts on the impact of shipping wines? Thanks, Joe"

Black olives and bay leaf flavors on the nose. Rich and dense with chocolate and green pepper notes. There's a hint of truffle and some barnyard, before the wine finishes on barely ripe...

A very earthy nose of mushrooms, wet soil and truffles. Firm acids on the attack, give way to sour cherry and raspberry flavors. The finish is taught, but offers good fruit and some nice vanilla...
