The amazing aromas and flavors literally burst forward from this red wine, perfectly reminding me of autumn. Spicy ripe cherry aromatics explode followed by violets, while flavors arise full of cassis, and raspberries. Richly textured with good acidity and providing a full mouth feel, then gliding into a long silky finish that continues on and on.

...Looking in the glass like it was poured from an inkwell... dark, brooding and daring, this Gigondas matches in the strength of its aromas: waves of violets, herbs, blueberry, and plum followed by a smoky minerality. Then onto the palate with big, contrasting flavors of gamey meats, black pepper, tea and black cherries. All combine to create a very complex package with a silky finish. This definitely will age well, but is very approachable now.

Animal and gamey on the nose, resinous with vegetal and leather notes, with a palate of blackberries, blueberries, that finishes a little flat and loses interest at the end.

I think this might have been just past the curve... but strangely enough worked well with risotto... it did have a few interesting qualities like aromas of Vinsanto/Moscata, melon, cantelope, apple compote with over-ripe fruits. The color was an amber yellow, a bit darker than it probably should be.

Blue ruby colors paint this with INTENSE wood aromas, sour cherries, chocolate, black cherries cough syrup, unique, pruny and velvety... with a kick... 16% alcohol! I loved this wine

May 2009
A red wine from the Gigondas Appellation in the Rhone region of France, and made from 100% Grenache grapes, this rich Gigondas opened very nicely as the evening went on.Lush and velvety on the tongue with good depth, showing verdant aromas of animal nuances, the bouquet evolving in waves of plums, dark berries, earth, mushroom and at the very end a bit of green peppers. All these elements successfully make "the whole greater than the sum of the parts" resulting in a finish that is complex and thoroughly satisfying.

From the Abruzzo appellation comes this deeply colored, medium bodied red wine from Italy, made with 100% Montepulciano and aged in Slavonian oak. Fresh aromas of cassis, plums and red currant lie beneath a layer of subtle fruit with earthy overtones of spices, specifically cinnamon, with a suggestion of herbs. Its pleasant but basic simplicity makes this a good everyday wine that will go well with pizza, pasta or even some chicken dishes.

An old world beauty, and one of Italy's rising stars is the Nero d'Avola of Sicily. This one, Tasca d'Almerita Regaleali, shows multiple verdant aromas that express a certain earthiness and connection with the land. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks and the juice is macerated with the skins for 10 days. The wine is then aged for 6-8 months in Slavonian oak barrels with 5% aging in Allier and Troncais barrels, it is then aged in bottle for 2 months before release. Bright ruby red in color, with notes of sweet balsamic, cassis, dark berries, cherries, blackberries, and vanilla... all creating a complex bouquet. After decanting for an hour or so, got a bit of spice and herbs, even a little mint... this wine is a sensory explosion with great mouthfeel and dry fruit finish that's very well balanced. It has a certain regal air about it. Love it, great value in the $10-15 range.

Campo Viejo Crianza 2005 TempranilloFrom Rioja, Spain comes this wonderful Crianza ... aged for 12 months in oak casks and another 12 in bottle. Dark ruby in color with warmer colors around the edges and a medium body, this has rich, jammy aromas and sniff, sniff... hmm, there are some horses in the barn... and a hint of minerality. On the palate is a warm strawberry pie (you can almost chew it), super ripe plum and raw (as opposed to toasted) wood. Nice velvet tones at the end stretch across the finish line.
