Sandlewood and tar, allspice on the nose, probably my favorite part of this wine (right now). I think the 2007 is still too young, took a while to open up, 1.5 hours or so, at which point it showed some nice black cherry notes with good structure and acidity. i think this will get better if you hold a bottle, but at this price, to drink right now, give me the Seghesio or the Klinker Brick for bargain Zins to drink now.

my understanding is that Qupe is trying to produce a more simple, old world style of the Rhone varietals. based on that, and that this is their entry level wine, i'd expect it to display character typical to french syrah without expanding much beyond that...almost a primer to their other wines, and i feel that's exactly what this is. i think it's very solid at that price point.

perhaps it was due to just returning from a pinot tasting extravaganza in the Russian River Valley, but i felt this wine was overly simple. i realize oregon pinot, in general, is supposed to reflect a more old world style, but it seemed overly tannic, very little fruit came through (under-ripe cherry mostly). it's a bit young, and it mellowed out a bit after i left the last two glasses in the bottle on the counter overnight...i'd try it again in a year.

bought this last night to pair with broiled mackerel, which, it accomplished beautifully...upon opening the fruit really stands out, like honey-dipped peaches with a faint citrus on the finish, this worked great with more oily, potent fish like mackerel. My gripe is that it goes dead FAST. we had it open an hour at which point the mid-palette was gone completely, and only the sweetness remained, but for the price, i'd buy it if i was serving more people and it would be drank quickly.

Good up-front stone fruit (i got mainly apricot), some honey, a bit sweet in the mid pallette, not overly sweet, a twist of citrus...great value for summer.
