Not a fan of California Chardonnays, I was delightfully surprised with this Lucas and Lewellen Burgundy. I know a lot of CA. wineries are backing off the malolactic bacteria but I have yet to find one, until now, that I can embrace. Peaches, apples and apricots, without the stong presence of the malo by-product "diacetyl," this is more in the nature of a French Chardonnay, i.e.,a Pouilly-Fuisse or a Montrachet or even a true Chablis. Sharp, clean, crisp fruit, with seemingly perfect balance.

This is a light burgundy but don't let that throw you. It is a lovely wine, elegant and complex enough to satisfy the most enthusiastic burgundian aficionado. Redolent with the requisite black cherries, it is laced with hints of plum, nectarine and apricot. A luscious match with pasta and lighter fare, it would add grace and charm to canopies and Vienna sausages.

This is a rich, dark, black cherry and currant Petite. The lush satin fruit up front and the smooth finish will have you checking the date on the bottle. It is a wine you can pair with the most exotic foods but is accessible to quaff with cheese and crackers. This 2005 Petite is a true masterpiece, complex and compelling, that will just get better with time.
