A smooth, fruity and extremely bold Syrah that fails to disappoint. At its price range, the 2006 Zaca Mesa is hard to beat and easy to enjoy. Wine Spectator: 93

Being their flagship wine, I expected a little more complexity and depth but the Hess Select Cabernet was smooth and truthful to Napa Valley reds.

Foxen is an impressive, quaint winery tucked away in the hills of Santa Barbara and boasts some great, tasteful wines. Their 2006 Pinot is, as the wine maker notes, very fruit forward with earthy flavors. Overall a well-balanced and memorable wine well worth a taste.

A traditional California Pinot with it's strong fruit bouquets and lighter style, but needs quite some time to open up. After breathing, it reveals much more earthy and robust flavors.

A tart and fruity Cabernet that bodes well at a young age. Concentrated with flavors of blackcherry while lending itself to higher acidic and moderate tannin levels. Great in the mouth but produces a rather insipid finish.

The 2004 Domaine Pierre Damoy Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the better, if not best, Burgundy wines I have sampled in this price range ($250). Aged for only fours years, the wine exhibited unparalleled complex, diverse and bold flavors. Hints of berries, smoke and wood made for a silky and smooth taste. The long, fruity finish, higher acid and tannin levels and strong, vibrant scents all blended nicely to produce a superior and satisfying full-bodied red wine.

Wine Spectator: 85 Wine Enthusiast: 86 "The 42° South range of wines is intended to be fruit-driven and 'food-friendly' in style without being too intellectual or challenging. Our fruit selection, from different vineyard sites around Tasmania, and straight-forward, down-to-earth winemaking techniques are aimed at producing wines with clear and characteristic varietal fruit flavours."

The 2005 De Montille Puligny-Montrachet Premiere Cru "Le Cailleret" is a distinguished full-bodied white Burgundy displaying hints of green apples, flowers and - perhaps just a personal opinion - popcorn. Certainly a vibrant and refreshing wine to enjoy with its bold yet amiable finish.
