Added Nov 29, 2012 at 10:59pmNose is a little hot. Some dark fruits come through but not huge. Nose seems to be missing something. Black cherry and blackberry palate with a slight peppery finish. Problem I have with this wine is that there seems to be this "fake, metallic" taste on the finish. I've tried letting it breathe, I've tried tasting it on day 2 and I've tried a myriad of foods to accompany it (and have surprising found that I can't find anything to pair it with). I had a cheese platter with it when I first opened it and it clashed with every single cheese I tried. I'm not overly impressed with this. It's OK but that's it. I have to drink it as a stand-alone since I can't find a food pairing and all I can say is that it's palatable. There are better zins for less money and this one's pretty cheap if you catch my drift.

Added Jul 29, 2012 at 11:14pmDifferent style than what I'm used to in a pinot noir. This is 100% pinot, unoaked, fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Color is light ruby. The nose is quite nice. Some floral notes and a ton of ripe red berries. On the palate it's a quite fruity wine, not what I'd call a fruit bomb but the red raspberry and plum notes steal the show. The alcohol comes through a bit too much for me and did not diminish even with a good decanting so that was a bit of a disappointment. Finish is crisp but with a touch of heat. Only very slightly off balance between the flavor profile and the alcohol but overall a decent wine for the price, especially for those out there that want to try something just a little different. All in all, I actually kind of liked it. I wouldn't buy a case of the stuff but I may keep a bottle in the cellar. I do want to reiterate that the nose on this is wonderful. I could sit there just smelling this wine for an hour before taking a sip. If not for that I might give it a lower rating. Really nice bouquet, so-so on the palate and finish. 3 glass rating.

Added Jul 23, 2012 at 11:07pmVery dark, deep garnet color. If not for the red ring showing around the top edge when it sits in the glass you could almost swear it's pitch black. Black cherry, blackberry and a hint of vanilla on the nose. Big cherry bomb on the palate and a ton of vanilla. There's also a hint of "sweetness" on the palate that I'm sure comes from the winemaking method of using 20% dried grapes. Some pepper and clove on the finish. Finish lingers for quite some time. Tannins are there but do not show the grip I'm used to in a cab (I drink more Cali cabs than Aussie) However, considering that this is a different style and not a traditional cab, it's quite a nice and different experience. Good stuff. 4.0 glass rating.

Renwood Grandpere 2004Compare and Buy
Average Price: $18.99
Added Jul 18, 2012 at 11:04pmI find that most zinfandels do not age well. This is no exception. It's 2012 as I'm writing this and the 2004 is probably 3 years past its prime. The nose was somewhat promising with smoke, plum and clove. A bit too much smoke for me but I've found that Renwoods are generally very smokey zinfindels, even at their peak. The palate is where the wine shows its age. Again, heavy smoke flavor profile overwhelmes and there are some bright cherry notes and even a little hint of coffee, but the wine seems a tad "watered down". It lacks that "oomph" that even a moderately good zin will show at least a little of. The finish has some length but is weak. In the end, it's drinkable now but won't last much longer. I'll give it 2.5 glasses with the acknowledgment that it was probably worthy of at least a full glass more in the rating if I had tried it 4 years ago. If you're sitting on a bottle of this in your cellar, crack it open before it's too late.

Added Apr 26, 2012 at 12:05amNice black fruit and pepper on the nose. Cherry bomb on the palate. Nice long finish with a hint of smokiness and tar. Dangerously smooth at 15.1%abv....you can hardly tell there's alcohol in this at all. Had company over tonight and got this out of the cellar. Had several people ask what it was. This stuff stole the show. Astoundingly good. I'm a huge zin fan and quite honestly this is one of the best zins I've ever had. This one was 7 years old and had started to throw a little sediment, but that's just part of the fun. I'm going to see if I can find more. Got this at a little hole-in-the-wall, out of the way liquor store in a small rural town in northern MN. Next time I'm in that vicinity I'll stop in to see if they have more. Little spendy but worth every penny.
