December 2008
A pale yellowish green in the glass, this riesling from the hot 2007 vintage offers lightly floral aromas along with those of dried apricots and fresh lime with a great minerally quality. The palate is lighter bodied and lithe, but still fills the mouth with intense minerality, bursting citrusy-lime flavors and an undercurrent of apricots. Several 2007 riesling I've tasted were flat and lifeless, but this one is anything but. The acidity is almost electric in its liveliness and the finish is lengthy, lingering with lime and slate notes. Morten only made 150 cases of this wine

This wine is made from 100% Heron Hill Estate Vineyard-grown fruit from vines that are more than 30 years old. Yields are kept low. The vineyard is also sustainably farmed with herbicides or chemical insecticides strictly avoided. 192 cases were made.Extremely pale yellow-green in the glass, the nose is driven by intense mineral-slate aromas with just-ripe pear, lemon and lime zest and even a bit of petrol. A surge of slate and minerals greets the palate as well, with more pear and citrus zest flavors. Bone dry and light-to-medium bodied, the mouthfeel is lively with great acidity. It seems like a wine that has many years ahead. I'm glad that I have a couple more bottles in the cellar.

November 2008
A standout from a region where cabernet is rarely successful. This wine is richly, deeply scented with black cherry, vanilla, sweet plum and slightly smoky aromas. The flavors are dark, with blackberries, black cherries and black pepper accented by smoky-sweet cedar, fresh herbs -- particularly thyme -- and faint licorice nuances. Medium-to-full bodied, this is a somewhat hefty wine, but still one of refinement because of the well-integrated tannins. 148 cases were made.

Peconic Bay Riesling 2006

It pours an extremely pale yellow with a subtle greenish tint. Floral aromas lead on the nose along with ripe pears and lemons. Secondary flavors of pineapple and even a little petrol add complexity and personality. On the palate, it is medium bodied and seems a bit bigger than previous vintages, with loads of ripe, juicy pear and citrus flavors balanced by tongue-tingling, minerally acidity. The clean, lingering finish is highlighted by a citrusy-floral note at the very end that invites sip after sip.

Far and away my favorite CDW red, the nose is complex - Tracy compares it to Chateauneuf du Pape - with plums, cherries, sweet and savory spice, dusty earth and cocoa. The palate is round and medium-bodied with surprisingly (for a wine this young) complex layered flavors that include plums, cherries and blueberries, spices, earth, black pepper and roasted meat. There's even a squirt of blood orange juice towards the finish. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated but provide good structure. Though probably not built for long-term cellaring, 3-5 years seems a good bet. At $35, it's probably not a great value, but there are several local wines in that price range that don't deliver the flavor and depth.

Made with 78% merlot, 17% cabernet sauvignon and 5% petit verdot, it is a fine effort that does a nice job balancing the power and intensity of the dry, hot 2005 growing season with a bit of elegance and emerging nuance.Right out of the bottle, the wine's youth is strongly evident, making it a bit "California" in character with primary aromas and flavors of blackberry, oak and vanilla dominating. But with some time in the glass, secondary and tertiary flavors emerge, morphing what could have been just another over-oaked red into a wine with complexity and nuance.Dark berry and plum fruit character are joined by subtle cocoa bean, espresso, spice and herb notes. The tannins are well integrated and softer than you might expect. The finish is long and invites another sip.

96% sauvignon blanc and 4% semillon, their nod to the white wines of Bordeaux. The nose is expressive with fresh pear, lemon, grapefruit and herbal-grassy notes mingling. The palate brings similar flavors-with the addition of a squirt of lime and a sprinkling of salty minerality. Medium bodied and impeccably balanced with snappy acidity, this is a wine born beside the sea and one that goes with anything from the sea.

It is a blend of chardonnay, viognier and sauvignon blanc and the nose is expressive with super-ripe peach and apricots up front with vanilla, faint toasted oak, baking spice and fresh flowers layered behind.Extremely flavorful and well textured, it fills the mouth with spiced apricot and peach pie flavors, lemon zest, hints of mango, vanilla and sweet oak. There is terrific balancing acidity here that should give this some longevity and a lingering, slightly minerally finish stands out.

Tasted last weekend, this Riesling pours a brilliant pale yellow with a few tiny bubbles clinging to the inside of my glass. The nose is intensely floral at first with orange blossoms and honeysuckle aromas. Behind the fresh flowers, there are scents of fresh peaches, apricots and lime. Extremely faint hints of petrol emerge as the wine warms a bit.Light bodied and vivacious, Roth's riesling delivers a vibrant initial burst of peach, lemon-lime and Bartlett pear fruitness. There is some residual sugar (14 g/l) here, so it's a little sweet, but there is plenty of balancing, mouth-watering acidity, which keeps it from feeling heavy or cloying. As it crosses over your palate, that fruity fruity burst mellows a bit, becoming more citrusy than peachy, with minerally and wet stone flavors. The finish, which is lengthy, ends on a citrus zest note that invites sip after sip.

But this wine, a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, is proof that in hot years like 2005, Long Island cabernet sauvignons can be both intensely flavorful and elegantly age-worthy.A rich, deep purple in the glass, the nose is just as dark and intense, with aromas of crushed blackberries, black cherries and figs backed by toasty vanilla, minty-basil and faint smoke notes. Medium bodied and ripe across the board--fruit and tannins--the flavors closely match the aromas with a long, earthy finish that hints at gravelly, mineral character.Drinking well now after decanting, this one will improve for years--even a decade or more. Only 157 cases were made.
