Added May 11, 2010 at 9:14pmAs with all the low yield wines which the San Valentino vineyard produces the Eclissi Di Soli is replete with sensuous and subtle aromas – most prominent amongst them is the interesting combination of tobacco and vanilla. No scales of justice ever produced balance superior to this offering. Nor does one usually fine the crystalline depth which this offering positively exudes. Then there is the wonderful lingering finish that bespeaks a quality usually found in a wine many times the meager cost of this $25 offering. Call it a Super Tuscan if you want, but the gentleness and complexity of the Eclissi bespeaks a rarified level of quality unusual to that genre. Outstanding wine. 94.

Added May 3, 2010 at 10:56pmA light wine which still manages to drip with the taste of honey and pineapple. Even so, this outstanding effort is not to sweet and nicely balanced with just the right acidic addition. For those who like a white Rhone-style wine this is a very good one. 93.

Added May 3, 2010 at 7:15pmAn inviting bouquet of dark chocolate, black currant and raisin whets one’s lips for the coming encounter with this opulent offering. There is some serious depth, balance and layers of flavor to this one. This is what the “SuperTuscan” experience is (or should be) all about! Fabulous! 93.

Added Apr 28, 2010 at 10:40pmA subtle scent of licorice, leather and violets meet the nose in a quite pleasant presentation. The supposed 50% Grenache/50% Syrah blend tilts towards the Grenache (I doubt it’s actually 50/50.) Nice bargain for the price. Parker gives this wine a 92. That’s pushing it just a bit for me. The finish is too short to accord that type of score, IMHO. Still, this is a nicely balanced offering with good depth that is very accessible. 90.

Added Apr 27, 2010 at 9:50pmI bought this wine for $7.95 from Empire Wine primarily because of the New York Times review rating it a “best buy.” Oft times my opinion diverges from that of The Times. Not in this instance. This is an absolutely wonderful wine! Subtle and balanced this offering lacks significant depth, but it is still an unbelievable bargain. The nose is initially beset by floral and herbal aromas before it slides across the palate with the tart taste of cherries and a surprising minerality. The finish is smooth (if not particularly long) and the price/quality ratio outstanding! Stock up on this one! 90.

Added Apr 26, 2010 at 9:41pmBlue fruit, grape and mineral on the nose. There is a decided sense of opulence about this fruity offering. Well balanced with a nice, but not a terribly long finish. Nice little wine. 91.

Added Apr 15, 2010 at 10:18pmA straightforward black currant and fruity bouquet. For the money ($7.95 at Empire Wine) this one isn’t bad with plenty of jammy blue fruit, a touch of leather and a hint of wintergreen. Not much depth or complexity, but nicely balanced with a short finish. Pretty good cheap bottle of wine. 87.

Added Apr 13, 2010 at 9:03pmSmoky oak and leather on the nose. This offering is remarkably accessible and beautifully balanced with a lingering openness rare for such a young vintage. The opulent taste of dark fruit, smoke, leather and licorice dominate this wonderfully balanced 70% Sangiovese, 20 Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot blend. Indeed, the low yields which comprise this stylish cuvee serve to vault this wine into elite company. Great with cheeses. 92.

Caparzo Brunello 2003Compare and Buy
Average Price: $46.24
Added Apr 6, 2010 at 8:23pmScorched earth, vanilla and blue fruit on the nose. A nice balance between the acidity and abundant fruit is immediately apparent on first tasting. Full bodied with nice, though not great depth, this offering is balanced and tasty even though it lacks complexity. Nice with pizza, lasagna and other Italian tomato influenced entrees. Good bottle. 91.

Added Apr 5, 2010 at 8:45pmA strong scent of black cherry buffered by a the fragrance of violets on the nose. The initial foray across the palate is juicy, balanced with excellent depth and surprisingly smooth. Hedonistic, sumptuous and sporting an outstanding price/quality ratio this wine unfurls into a fruit filled, succulent, persistent finish. Outstanding wine. 91.
