    Jimmy Cocktail's Review:

The first thing you notice is its color. A very dark ruby color that turns translucent (you can see light through it) when the light hits it just right. Very reminiscent of the gem of the same name. It's simply beautiful. The nose is one of cherries with an earthy undertone of moss and leaves. Upon first taste, one is hit with the taste of big fruity cherries and a nice little bit of acidity to offset the fruitiness. there are hints of roasted corn, moss and hazelnut on the nice long finish. It is a medium to heavy bodied wine, something that will stand up well to any strongly flavored dish you would want to pair it with. It has very soft tannins which make this an enjoyable wine to drink now. Priced at $25 this is well worth buying two and sticking one away for a bit.

The 2007 Zinfandel is made from juice that comes from ancient vines in the Lodi region. It is exactly what one would expect of a Lodi Zin. It is a translucent garnet in color fading to dark orange at the edge. It is a big wine, coming in at 14.5% alcohol and this alcohol is apparent in the nose. Once you get through this bite of alcohol, you get aromas of blackberry quickly followed by tar and tobacco. On the palate, the blackberry is very pronounced and is followed by tar and a very long and lingering spicy finish. The soft tannins of this wine make it very ready to drink now. This is a wine that goes down easily, especially for those that aren't normally red wine drinkers. And coming in at around $12 a bottle, this is a wine that can easily be served in quantity for a party.

It is a blend of 40% Mazuelo, 40% Syrah and 20% Garnacha (Grenache). It is a full bodied wine with a luxiorious dark ruby color that gives you a strong nose of plum and blackberry. There is a great depth to the flavor with the plum and blackberry up front and a hint of spice and a nice mineral finish. When it's all said and done, there is just a touch of blackberry that lingers teasingly. This wine is ready to drink now but a little time out of the bottle won't hurt it.

    Jimmy Cocktail's Review:

This is a wine that benefits from breathing a couple of hours before drinking. It is pretty tight and the tannins are very pronounced when the bottle is first opened. Once it starts to open up though, you can immediately tell that you have something special on your hands. The nose is all smoke and leather riding upon a wave of fruity plum and black cherry. On the pallate you get a strong taste of leather which quickly fades to black cherry and it leaves a light spicyness behind as part of its very long finish. It is a big wine at 13.4% but you don't notice the alcohol in the slightest. This wine is clearly a step up for the Chrysalis winery, one that I'm very happy to see them make. It is a tad pricey at $35 per bottle, but given the small production on this wine, this is one flaw that can be forgiven.

    Jimmy Cocktail's Review:

The wine itself is a beautiful deep ruby color that lets plenty of light through. This is a big wine, 14.5% alcohol, but you don't sense that in the nose. That's because this wine has a wonderfully powerful nose of leather, cigar and tobacco. Just smelling it conjures up images of an old study in some mansion with overstuffed leather chairs and walls of books. On tha palate this imagery continues as there is just a hint of plum and then you are again washed with leather and tobacco with just a bit of coffee to round things out. Very smooth with almost no tannins present. A wonderful sipping wine especially since it can be found for under $15.

I found this to be an interesting if not overly complex wine. The color is a light garnet fading to a brown/orange at the edge. The nose was one of the earth, the scent of moss and stone was there with a subtle little play of vanilla at the very end. There was also a touch of alcohol burn at the end as this is a potent wine coming in at 14% alcohol. Upon taste, there was dark cherry, plum and a bit of spice but these were quickly disapated by the tannins. Not that you were assaulted by the tannins, but I thought they were overly represented as once they hit, there was almost no lingering flavor. Still, I would not hesitate to serve this as a food wine, the typical pairings of a pasta with a strong topping being most welcome.

This wine has a nice deep garnet color, with enough transluceny to see flashes of light through it when the light hits it right. Very pretty. It's nose presents charcoal and smoke with a slightly spicy aroma. At first you taste a spicy strawberry with a touch of smoke. It doesn't last long but it leaves behind a touch of strawberry. This is a smooth wine without a lot of tannins. I personally think that this would be great paired with cheeses or lamb. I also think that this is a great value as it can be found around $12 per bottle.

    Jimmy Cocktail's Review:

The wine was a dark ruby color but not so thick that you couldn't see light through it. The nose had a strong petroleum smell with green pepper. You tasted a bit or the petroleum at first, but this quickly gave way to berry and green pepper. This wine was heavy on the tannins and left a puckery finish in your mouth. Overall it had a bit of a rustic feel, not a lot of complexity but it would make a nice accompaniment to a grilled steak.

    Jimmy Cocktail's Review:

The wine named One from Rene Sparr is exactly the kind of wine you expect when you think of a wine done in an Alsatian style except that this is a blend rather than a wine from only one varietal. This wine is a blend of 28% Muscat, 39% Sylvaner, 9.5% Pinot Blanc, 16% Riesling, and 7.5% Klevener de Heiligenstein (an Alsatian designation of the Savagnin grape). This wine is a pale yellow in color but not so pale as to be almost colorless. When you first breath in this wine, there is a light floral scent and then a big blast of wildflower honey. You really expect this wine to be sweet but that is totally wrong. There is a light acidity up front with a hint of honey and then a mineral finish that doesn't linger. I really liked this wine, it would be a nice diversion on a hot afternoon or a great accompaniment for a summer time picnic.

The color of this wine is a translucent violet. The nose first gives you the scent of alcohol (it is a 14% wine) followed by chocolate and cherry. The taste starts with a dark cherry which quickly slides to a spicy, peppery finish that doesn't linger on the palate. It is a well balanced, big wine that would be great with a pasta with a heavy red sauce.
