Quinta Cruz Graciano 2008
Added Feb 25, 2011 at 2:20amInteresting use of a lesser known Spanish variety. Smoky and oaky, deep aromas of red and black fruit. Good acid structure, though the finish was a bit astringent for me. Quinta Cruz is a label associate with the Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard. It was formed specifically to produce wine of Spanish varieties being grown in the US. The 2008 Graciano is the first 100% Graciano I have tasted. The fruit was sourced from Bokisch Vineyards in the Mokelumne River Appellation, north of Lodi, CA. Central Valley fruit from a variety that seems to excel there (and not just survive with tons of irrigation, a la Merlot and Cab Sauv). 13% alcohol, 157 cases. Feb. 9, 2011.

Added Feb 25, 2011 at 2:08amCherry dominates on nose. Lots of heat on nose and in mouth - not surprising given its 15.0% alcohol percentage. Its balance is surprising, considering its high alcohol.

Added Feb 25, 2011 at 1:59amFruit forward on the nose, with cherry and raspberry most pronounced. Delightful, well balanced Cab Franc - balance between acid and tannins is excellent. Slightly hot in the mouth (14.2% alcohol). Fruit sourced from Ghielmetti Vineyards, in eastern Livermore valley. Total production of 22 cases. Barrel aged 26 months. I'm glad Page Mill has begun to release its Cab Franc as single vintage, single varietal and not just as part of a blend.
