Subtle notes of black pepper and root beer greet the nose along with brushy black fruits. A hint of sweetness on attack lends this roundness in the mouth and helps to fill out the fairly fruity palate. The tannins are a bit touch lending this a bit of an extracted feel and lingering dryness on the moderately long finish. This is a bit workmanlike with nice dark cherry fruit and flavors but the wine is just too tough and dry. 82pts

A touch dull on the nose with hints of older wood topping the core of slightly minty and coffee toned baked fruit. A bit small scaled in the mouth and smooth if still feeling a bit over-extracted. This has a nice texture to it, just a little broad shouldered and matte, but at the same time it sits low on the palate, not really showing much inner mouth perfume or intensity of flavor. What is there is attractive enough, black cherry and spice fruit with very well judged and integrated wood but this seems designed to offend no one as opposed to trying to impress anyone. A chunky little wine that is moderately easy to drink. 83pts

Rather intensely aromatic and unusual with rich aromas of soy marinated beef, carob, black cherry am and antiseptic herbal nuance. Big in the mouth, though light on its feet and not terribly extracted. The palate here mimic the nose with carob rich flavors of black cherry and blackberry fruit all wrapped up with hints of dried herbs. It’s not what I’m looking for in Syrah, but it is long and the wine, while moderately structured, is well balanced and fairly long. Still a bit puzzling in the mouth. 84pts

Low on the nose but true to its varietal roots with soft layers of violet, blood, and blackberry fruit laid over a well integrated base of oaky spice. In the mouth this is a bit low in acid, rich and matte on the palate. The wood tannins immediately intrude on the rich, soft and rather attractive palate with its violet candy and wild plum flavors. A modest finish wraps things up here though those aggressive tannins do linger in the mouth. Fairly well done if seemingly over extracted. 84pts

Raw wood greets the nose, effusive and abruptly covering anything else this might have to offer other than some subtle floral notes. Soft on entry and nice round if small in the mouth with an attractive core of red strawberry and wild cherry fruit. The wood is here but not nearly as intrusive as on the nose. Soft and easy drinking, this does pick up cedar and perfumy notes on the finish, which is surprisingly long and rather lively with red fruit and attractive acidity. It’s really quite gulpable and fresh once you get past the nose. 84pts

Bright, effusive even on the nose with sweetly candied violet and sour plum aromas along with gamy hints of leather and a suggestion of ginger and spicy mushroom. A touch low in acid in the mouth, this is a little rough around the edges with fresh tannins adding some textural detail. the flavors are a touch cooked with jammy black cherry notes on the palate leading to moderately complex dried herb, game and older wood tones on the backend. A bit dried out perhaps, this reminds me a bit of Spanish or Portuguese wines. The nose really is terrific and those sweet candied aromas do slowly emerge in the mouth as well adding some pomegranate accents to the palate and lending some lift to the slightly touch and drying finish. This is attractive but rustic. BBQ up some wild boar, or maybe porcupine, and see how this fares. 85pts

Sweet, savory and floral on the nose with very attractive and classical Syrah aromas. Theres a hint of reduction here lending this a slight rubbery edge but as that blows off the violet, white pepper, and plum aromas become more dominant, though some clumsy oak also adds to the bouquet. A bit soft in the mouth, this is quite rich and smoothly textured with acidity that adds a hint of sour plum to the backend of the palate and tannins that keep this from being too smooth and polished. there’s some artificial vanilla accents on the backend as well along with lovely, leafy blackcherry flavors that lead to a moderately long if slightly pasty finish. Easy to drink with some complexity. 85pts

A bit candied on the nose though with attractive animal animal, mint, and stemmy herb framing notes around a core of oak covered black fruit. Soft and broad on the palate, this has a tinge of sweetness to it, but retains attractive freshness in the mouth and rather classic black pepper tinged and espresso laced black cherry/berry flavors. Finishing a little on the dry side and short, this remains quite attractive with a fairly transparent feel in the mouth. the oak influence becomes more dominant with air, but it remains fairly well balanced and many people will love this. 85pts
