November 2009
Low key and roast meaty on the nose with dense dark cherry fruit and an aromatic, rosewood top note, a little tarry. Delicious style of wine, still youthful and rambunctious, yet with succulent acids and dense, yet fresh dark cherry fruit backed with some Christmas spices. The finish shows admirably purity and lovely, ripe fruit tannins. A really well balanced and complete bottle. 90pts

Upright and solid on the nose with slightly stemmy toned, and candied black cherry fruit, that features subtle hints of cardamom and coriander. This is packed with sweet fruit yet manages to avoid the cloying sweetness of many wines in this style. It's open and round with a rich, soft character and nice notes of spices and a hint of anise seed that carries over to the moderately long finish, which shows a bit more tannin and milk chocolate than one finds on the palate. 90pts

This opens slowly and cautiously with notes of pollen, licorice, and roasted ligonberry fruit. While subtle this is very complex with a faintly sweet edge to the medicinal herb notes and lovely insinuations of cigarette ash and limestone that gives this real finesse on the nose. This is an odd wine, fairly plush at once and then loose and with faded flavors but the intensity of the fruit grows on the palate and as opposed to getting bored with this I find myself being drawn in to it's subtlety. The finish is quite long with vibrant acids and the scratch of minerality that sets this apart from much pinot. The fruit is really wonderful with burnt cherry tones framed with tea and chalk. 91pts

Very floral at first with a light, whispery character that gains a soft, lightly vanilla and tamarind-scented edge to the soft strawberry fruit. There are backing notes of mocha, oaken spice that gain intensity but don't cover the fruit. Silken on the palate with stealthy tannins and wonderfully supportive acids that keep the slight herb and cocoa toned cherry and strawberry fruit fresh and lively across the palate. Really very fruity on the backend yet with a refreshing slight green edge that yields to some more oak spice and some obvious, yet integrated wood tannins. This should benefit from another year or two in bottle but is already delicious and very well balanced with impressive length to the finish. 92pts

Cola nut baked cherry pastry, herb, oak and earth all contribute to the complexity on the nose. This is a touch light but it uses that to its advantage keeping the fresh herb and floral edge wild cherry fruit bright and agile in the mouth. There's a lovely sapidity to this in the mouth that leads to a cherry pit and mineral laced finish that sees some nice tannins appearing on the finale. 89pts

Fantastic on the nose with animal fur, spicy, green herbs and stems, and incredible lift and height. This is a particular expression of Pinot that certain has its followers and dramatic appeal. There's plenty of fruit lurking under the engagingly high-toned aromatics in the black raspberry and slightly boysenberry toned register. This is smooth and rich with rich strawberry and raspberry toned fruit that has a dusting of cocoa with a real deep core of wonderfully ripe fruit that has a lively, vegetal, rhubarb edge to it. . The finish is still a bit rough with tannin and acid poking out but the fruit is pure, fresh and nicely complex. 93pts

A touch of vanilla and a touch of wood float atop the cola and smoke tinged warm black cherry fruit that gains lovely notes of strawberry tops and grassy herbs with air. This is smooth, with soft, integrated, ripe tannins and good acid keeping this from lying too fat across the palate. There's a lot of fruit here, very red and very raspberry toned with a nice spice on the palate. An easy drinking style, yet one with good length and a nice light green spice tone on the finale that remind me again of strawberry tops. 88pts

A touch of VA, black cherry, gamy, leathery, a bit of brett but instantly identifiable as Burgundy with a lovely sweetness to the fruit brought out by the background notes of bitter and medicinal herbs. All wrapped up in modest, but taught structure one finds medical toned wild berry/cranberry fruit with notes of earth, creosote and braised mushrooms. This is already complex though youthful and shows a bit of wood on the backend, as well as a lovely hint of stemminess. Those stemmy tannins really come out on the finish and give this excellent focus from entry to finale. A fine bottle of Burgundy. 90pts

A bit reticent with it's slightly gamy toned warm dark fruit. This grows to reveal earth, mineral and minty, floral tones that frame the jammy bitter cherry fruit. A bit relaxed across the palate this has lovely bitter cherry/berry fruit in a medium full bodied package that is simple but supported by some nice, slightly chalky tannins. The finish has real mineral cut to the cherry fruit. Overall this feels a touch tight at this stage and should benefit from a year or two in bottle. 87pts

At first the nose seems dominate by oak influence with vanilla and spice tones but with time the earthy fruit begins to rise from the glass. Earthy and stemmy with lots of cola and root beer, this lacks some focus. Very fresh feeling with a natural quality to the fruit supported by big structural elements, the palate impression of this wine is certainly different than what the nose promises. Wild berry tones on the palate are a touch gamy and sauvage with earth and spices tones playing supporting roles. This pushes through with a bright and assertively refreshing finish. Give it another year though it's excellent today. 90pt
