My wife and I have been enjoying fine wine, usually with excellent food, for 50 years. We keep a modest-sized cellar in midtown Manhattan in our basement, and regularly visit vineyards in California and Europe. Most recently we were in Madeira and Oporto.

I fully expected this wine to be dreck, based on estimates of lifetime from books and indeed from the winemaker a few months ago. In fact it was delicious! The caramel touches on top of the citrusy character gave it character and distinction. As a food wine, in this case shrimp scampi, it was excellent.

I found this 30-year old wine to be surprisingly good, much better than expected, even for a wine that has been kept in a temperature-controlled environment. The earthy tones prevailed, but there was still enough fruit to make it compelling and delicious. Went very well with the food (osso buco).

I completely agree with Amanda's comments and rating of this 1983 Auselese. This was a gorgeous wine, and it went perfectly with Buche de Noel at our Christmas dinner.
