Beaudeaux

I'd like to improve my knowledge of Red wines, with a focus on New World varietals, and an emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Malbec and Shiraz grapes.

I rarely drink Pinots, as I prefer the heavier, full bodied varietals, but this Pinot is a real gem! Although it's medium bodied, it still has a nice weight in the mouth. Superb tannin, acid, and fruit balance that is gently oaked.

Delicious dark and red berry tannins with soft acidity and a round, smooth and supple finish. Ready to drink now, but should age nicely over the next ten years. Lives up to the excellent 2006 California Cabernet season.

Promising young Cabernet. It has classic youthful tannins with black currant, black cherry, and plum aromas and similar fruit taste structure. A hint of oak and vanilla. Should age well and reach its prime in a few years. P.S. A more recent tasting (August 2012) suggests that this wine is maturing nicely. It's more balanced, and the tannin structure is a little more complex as compared to a 2011 tasting.

Tait's 2010 Ball Buster, a blend of 77% Shiraz, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Merlot aged in American oak barrels. Opaque and purple-colored, it's a velvety mix of plum, berry, licorice, spice box, blueberry, and blackberry flavors. It should match well with any savory sauces and heavier meat dishes.

The villages of Barolo and Barbaresco in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, produce fine wines from the Nebbiolo grape. La Spinetta sources grapes from the entire Langhe district. This wine has a unique oak, berry aroma. Medium-bodied with choke cherry, black berry, leather, tobacco and oak notes. Concentrated fruit and fine tannins with a lingering, bright berry snap on the finish. Great accompaniment to a grilled summer meal.

You have to agree with Robert Parker on this one. This is a finely nuanced Amarone. The tannins are beautifully balanced with a lovely, juicy, berry palate and cherry tones. Very drinkable right now. Load up the truck!

This is a truly elegant Malbec. There are complex fruit and spice notes with a balanced acidity. These qualities refine the Malbec flavor in a superior fashion compared to many other Argentine Malbecs. This was a great vintage for top Argentine Malbecs.

This Monterey Chardonnay is great value for the price. J. Lohr produces excellent reasonably priced wines of various varietals. This Riverstone Chardonnay has distinct flavors of buttery citrus with a well balanced acidity and tones of stone fruits. It has a smooth finish with no bitter after notes. Load up the truck!

Knights Valley lives up to its name. This is a noble Cabernet that's well balanced, and free of any unpleasant side notes. The fruit aroma and palate are superb, and there's a hint of anise that completes the finish.

This is an elegant Malbec with an excellent balance of dark berry fruits, tannins, acid, and smoothness. Very subtle spice tones, and a pleasant finish. Load up the truck on this one.
