A crisp, dry, wine, characteristic of Austrian table wine. An slightly fruity nose followed by a strong mineral flavor with some bite to it. I'd pair this with cheese--strong cheese, and fragrant pears or ripe peaches--for a first course; with grilled and blanched asparagus; or with a seasoned poultry dish, maybe even mesquite barbegued chicken seasoned with thyme. A fair value, but there are better buys out there.

Powerful mineral, earth and to a lesser extent, smoke and moss flavors. The fruit is present, but thin. Interesting. Would nicely accompany a meal of beef rouladen and dumplings. A fairly priced table wine.

Downed my first ever glass of Monte Antico Toscana at the end of a day in the field, with a supper of linguini and steamed vegetables, tossed in butter, black pepper and gratings of a robust parmesan cheese. All wonderful. This is a really nice Tuscan wine and an exceptional value. It has a pleasant berry flavor, but mostly I taste minerals and spices, with a mellow nutmeg in the mix. I like this wine very much.

A perfectly good table wine, light with a pleasant carry on the palate. Not complex at all but enjoyable to drink just the same. Would go well with cold antipasti or a main course based around red sauce.

Mellow and nice, a good sipping wine softened and spiced by the merlot, given personality and length on the palate by the Sangiovese. Should age well. At this price, put away part of a case for a year or two and enjoy some now.

Layer Cake Shiraz 2008

I just don't appreciate Shiraz the way I do some other wines. This one is full bodied and fruity, with lingering flavors of tasty sweet things like chocolate and jams. As a sipping wine it is just too much before a meal, but not necessarily during or after. I could see this being a hit in a big wide open glass beside a bowl of cream bisque of crawfish or lobster, seasoned with fresh basil and black pepper, floating croutons pan toasted in butter; grilled sausage bursting with cayenne, garlic and cumin (maybe a link of boudin); pulled pork slowly smoked in a crust of dried mustard, celery seed and sea salt, over just a few chips of shagbark hickory. This wine, at its price, has a place at the table.

A very nice blend, taking the best of the three varietals and making a pleasant drinking wine of medium body. Fruit flavors predominate, balanced well with tannins and light mineral flavors, finishing with a bit of spice that lingers just long enough. a very good value.

A great full bodied wine, packed with fruit flavors of blackberry, persimmon and cherry, with just a little oak and tobacco in the finish. Enjoy hearty mouthfulls with a roast beef crusted in sea salt, rosemary and coarse black pepper, or a venison stew. Sip with very dark chocolate. A very good value.

I stumbled onto this bottle--a 2005 for $10--in a grocery store and bought it because I drank a different merlot from Fontana Candida a few months ago and liked it. This wine is from the Lazio province of Italy, is not particularly fragrant, but has an interesting earthy flavor that finishes spicy. I haven't tasted many like it for near the price; a great value. A fine pairing for pastas dressed with red sauce. I'm planning to have a bottle with a really great meatloaf soon.

I recently ordered this wine in a neighborhood restaurant in Rome on a waiter's recommendation. I'd never heard of it before. It has a very clear but deep color and medium body. The aroma was unremarkable but generally pleasant and not indicating a "fresh" wine. Nothing special to this point, which made the first taste such a surprise. The flavor is very spicy (black pepper and eastern seasonings like tumeric or ginger overpower any fruitiness that the texture and smell would have suggested); the taste lingers. It paired well with antipasto of roasted peppers, eggplant, and deep fried squash flowers with anchovy, and equally well with a meal of ravioli in a light marinara sauce, and linguini carbonara (liked it better with the carbonara, but it complimented both well). I'd try something else with mild cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables--or lighter main dish than we tried--as this wine would mask subtle flavors without the muscle to fight through or which lacked the staying power to outlast it on the tongue. We passed on dessert for a gelato nearby but I wish we'd had the opportunity to finish off the bottle with something made out of dark chocolate.
