1 Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Dashwood (2011)
Comments: A big roasted pepper character on the nose that’s both grassy and vegetal while remaining lively and freshly citrussy. Bright, lean and mineral on the palate with nice cut and a sweet edge of green kiwi fruit up front. Rather complete with nice length. Ripe, rich and zesty. 89pts

2 Tiefenbrunner Sauvignon Blanc Alto Adige Südtirol Kirchleiten (2010)
Comments: Quite intensely grassy on the nose with strong gooseberry and green plum notes accented with a touch of flint. Round in the mouth with vibrant, though integrated, acids that give this a rather lush feel accentuated by the slightly tropical, mango-tinged fruit. The finish explodes with big ripe fruit tones and while this really does offer nice crispness wrapped in lush fruit, it’s a bit much for my palate. Still, very successful. 90pts

3 Paul Jaboulet Aine Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc les Cedres (2010)
Comments: Rather tight on the nose with some dusty pollen notes and vague, meadow-like herb and grass tones, with hints of lanolin and coconut husk. On the palate this is quite well balanced, focused and tight with a fine acid spine and slow to emerge but layered flavors of flowers, sage, lemongrass and bitter apple fruit. The finish adds in some minerality and more herbal tones like green tea, unripe peach and a little anise seed on the finale. Good length, fine balance. I can see this improving in the bottle. 90pts

4 D'Arenberg "Hermit Crab" Viognier-Marsanne Mclaren Vale South Australia (2009)
Comments: Very floral on the nose with notes of lilac and jasmine topping apricot fruit, cut through by minerality. Lovely entry with a nice vein of acid leading the way, only to be wrapped up in light, round fruit on the mid-palate. There’s a nice nectarine, apricot quality to the fruit, which is not terribly ripe but fresh and bright with more floral/herbal notes on the back end. Leads to a fairly long finish replete with hints of honey and a fine, subtle raw nutmeat note and some mineral spice on the finale. 89pts

5 Hamilton Russell Chardonnay Walker Bay (2010)
Comments: This is obviously oaky on the nose with notes of cedar, toasted dark bread and butter cream, but the underlying apple and melon fruit is almost as assertive. On entry, this shows a rare combination of power and transparency, and while the oak is assertive the fruit is almost keeping apace. Toasty, nutty notes on the palate are underpinned by rich apple fruit. A touch of kiwi and green melon on the back end lead to a beautifully defined finish that shows oak and mineral notes under a fan of green fruit. This is really very fine. 93pts

10 Tenuta Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri Scalabrone Rosato (2011)
Comments: Fairly floral on the nose with tarry notes of saffron accenting dark, almost plummy fruit that shows some basil stem and tomato leaf aromas. Translucent on the palate with wonderful framing acidity and nice layered flavors of tart plum, red currant and wild strawberry. These drive across the fairly long finish, joined by decisive quartzy mineral notes and a faint undertone of almost bitter apple skins. This is really lovely with near perfect texture. 91pts
