1 Apaltagua Chardonnay Unoaked Reserva Casablanca Valley Chile (2013)
Comments: Almost gingery on the nose with real richness of ripe fruit all spicy apple, poached pear and grilled pineapple laced. This smells terrific and has some of the character of oaked Chardonnay coming from some of the creamy, leesy notes. Rich in the mouth, polished and round with bright, well integrated acidity lending the flavors, which verge on overripe, great freshness. There’s an opulence here and at the same time a sense of restraint that allows some mineral and soil tones to join the show on the midpalate. Finishing with solid length and more mineral notes, along with apple peels and a fine citrus and spice note, this is a fabulous unoaked Chardonnay and a compelling value. 89pts

2 Jacob's Creek Chardonnay Barossa Valley (2012)
Comments: Earthy, twiggy, and savory on the nose with lots of almost herb tinged complexity though not a lot of fruit. Bright, lean and fresh in the mouth, which is much like the nose: built on savoury complexity though here one also finds subtle caramel oak notes and shades of apples and melon fruit. It’s a wine that shows restraint and textural nuance right through the fairly long, heather and preserved, salted lemon tinged finish. A real change of pace from fruit forward Chardonnays and a wine that is easily misunderstood. This has attractive subtlety and real, savory complexity. 88pts

3 Vina Leyda Chardonnay (2013)
Comments: Classic Chardonnay on the nose with well judged oak adding vanilla and spice note to the core of pineapple and citrus fruits that pick up a touch of mango with air. A leading edge of creamy richness quickly gives way to tart acids that drive the green apple, pineapple, and lime flavors across the palate. This has some heft to it but the great acids keep it lively and engaging in the mouth. The oak is very well judged, lending some support on the plate but staying largely in the background until the moderately long finish where vanilla and spice emerge to add detail to the trailing edges of the apple and lime fruit. Very well done. 88pts

4 Castillo Monjardin Chardonnay El Cerezo Unoaked (2013)
Comments: Fresh and polleny on the nose with a hint of jellied orange candy laid under the zesty ginseng edged apple and nectarine fruit here. Bright, fresh and sapid in the mouth with early flavors of lime and lemon frenching the palate before they gain apricot and green apple nuance on the backend. there’s a hint of spice here, something slightly bitter and the candied note from the nose returns on the palate but there’s so much acidity and freshness here that it adds welcome nuance. The finish is a bit on the short and simple side, with that slightly bitter apple seed nuance emerging to add a refreshing finale. Delicious. 87pts

5 Cousino-Macul Chardonnay Antiguas Reserva Maipo Valley (2011)
Comments: Bright and floral on the nose with a ginger and cinnamon edge to the very ripe core of pineapple laden fruit. Creamy at first, with an initial wave of very ripe pineapple and mango fruit framed with gently toasted spice and vanilla. This gains focus in the mouth, though it remains with very ripe fruit flavors if lively and fresh feeling on the palate. The backend turns creamy again, gaining more toasted spice notes before this fades rather quickly on the modest finish. Front loaded and fairly rich on the palate, this should be quite popular. 86pts
