Rank Wine Rating Price
1 Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Indian Springs Wine Spectator (2008)
Comments: This rich wine is deeply complicated, but congenial. Powerful wood notes and black pepper, with a hint of smoked meats and mint. The mouth takes light first step, then fills the palate and has a black-fruit finish and a touch of jam. This wine should be approachable to many drinkers, fun to take in, dignified. It is a great wine for the price as well.

2 Hacienda Araucano Lurton Cabernet Sauvignon Colchagua Valley (2008)
Comments: Smooth chocolatey nose with the kind of wood aromas that I like in a wine, not overdone at all. The mouth has a dry, kind of funky earth attack, with some chalkiness and apple fruit acidity in the middle, and a smooth finish that shows a hint of white pepper.

3 Charles Smith Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley Chateau Smith (2008)
Comments: Really intense oaky aroma with blackberries. The mouth is similar to the nose, with some smoked meat. Fairly dry, with strong body acidity and tannins. Smooth finish.

4 Kanonkop Estate Pinotage Blend Stellenbosch Kadette (2008)
Comments: On my second tasting, I get more of the herbal factors, like dill and sage.

5 Blackstone Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Sonoma (2007)
Comments: Lots of alcohol on the nose, and peppery, with nutmeg and tea leaf. Charred oak toward the finish of the aroma. The mouth is rich, well balanced, and complexed, with smoked meat and blackberry. If you like bolder wines, I recommend it.
