1 Hartenberg Sauvignon Blanc Stellenbosch Rsa (2010)
Comments: This smells natural. I’m not sure if it is, but it shows heather and wild herb notes on the nose along with small, earthy fruits, a touch of white pepper spice and a hint of BO. Bright and light-bodied in the mouth, there is a lovely core of earth-edged fruit here. Fresh and complex with silica rich soil tones and gentle apple peel and lime pith notes that become more pronounced on the light, long and gently spicy finish. Rather elegant and fresh with a big pop of minerality that is almost salty on the finale. 90pts

2 Thelema Sauvignon Blanc Stellenbosch (2010)
Comments: Deep and rich on the nose with roasted green chili, cut grass and bitter melon aromas. Light and elegant on entry, this spreads across the mid-palate with soft lime and orchard fruit flavors. The acidity is perky but well-balanced, lending this a rich and bright mouth feel. The finish is decidedly light if long, with aromatic citrus notes over a base of mineral-inflected green apple fruit. 88pts

3 Morgenhof Estate Sauvignon Blanc Stellenbosch (2010)
Comments: Tight and almost chalky on the nose, this shows more mineral and taut fruit notes than many of the wines with subtle herbaceous hints. Light-bodied and fresh in the mouth, this has a creamy edge but remains quite transparent on the palate, showing some lightly tropical, mango-toned fruit flavors along with a nearly steely edge. The back end turns spicy with kiwi fruit notes that flow onto the moderately long citrus, tangerine cream finish, ending with some kiwi skin notes. A nice take on South African Sauvignon Blanc. 89pts

4 Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc Groenekloof Premium Range Neil Ellis-Sudafrika-Stellenbosch-Stellenbosch (2010)
Comments: This is green fruited and lightly sweet smelling with a lovely, sweetly vegetal, cut grass undercurrent on the nose. A touch of CO2 helps add brightness on the palate and a little prickle on the tongue. This opens rather broadly on the palate with nice tension, but the fruit is a touch matte. Citrus fruits and cut grass notes on the long, bright, very juicy and decisively acidic finish. The finish is actually quite long here and many will appreciate the wine’s subtlety. 87pts

5 Ken Forrester Sauvignon Blanc Stellenbosch (2010)
Comments: Reticent on the nose with gentle suggestions of fresh chili, cut grass, perfumed floral notes and soft citrus. Nice and focused on the palate, delivering rich fruit that balances an almost peachy note against a lightly bitter lime pith element that turns a touch mineral on the back end. This finishes with a spicy mineral element and more peach nuance and lime pith. Brisk and refreshing. 87pts

7 Simonsig "Sunbird" Sauvignon Blanc (2010)
Comments: Earthy nose that is slightly floral yet presents a base of soft chili, with melon top notes and a hint of smoke. Round on entry with a nice balance between sweetness and bright acidity supporting bright lime and sour apple fruit. The finish is modest and shows some nice tangerine and grapefruit notes. A bit fruity but fresh and showing good typicity in a popular style. 86pts

8 Partnership Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc (2010)
Comments: Bright and aromatic on the nose with gooseberry, cut grass and green plum aromas. Round yet bright on the palate, this delivers more green plum and green apple flavors with nice supporting acidity and a fairly rich mouth feel. The fruit really pops on the finish, showing an almost peachy character and a touch of sweetness that is balanced by ripe acidity. A bit of a different take on Sauv Blanc that shows nice cut and fine food pairing ability. 86pts

9 Excelsior Estate Sauvignon Blanc Robertson (2011)
Comments: This is overtly fruity on the nose with an almost red fruited character to the berry nose. Lots of trapped CO2 adds a light spritz on entry, which helps liven the palate. There’s a fair amount of fruit here, even if it is simple. Subtle mineral and herb nuances finish strongly along with a nice lime pith character on the finale. 85pts

10 Man Vintners Sauvignon Blanc (2011)
Comments: Not much going on on the nose, this is reticent though shows hints of a gently leafy green character. The mouth feel is quite attractive; lightly round but cut with fine, bright yet covered acidity, soft orchard fruit and sweet lime flavors. It’s not complex but it is refreshing, and it finishes with more depth of flavor than the palate leads one to believe. Fresh and easy to drink with a nice light bite on the finish. 85pts
