Top Rieslings

540854JTWinegeek Greg, I too love Riesling, and have been drinking it all my life. It is one of the first wines I look for when perusing BTG on a wine list. I have no problem with any of your selections, I have drank most over the years and love them. The selection does seem a bit narrow, where is Austria and the Finger Lakes??? I can name a number of producers that would fit nicely into this Top 10 (Kracher, Loimer, Red Newt, Hermann Weimer etc), and would be happy to open this dialougue with you. 256537DSMIW Greetings Greg, Australia gets riesling as you say, we are even seeing more and more competitively priced German and Austrian wines. Australia's best are full and rich with fruit character, good length... and they are almost always bone dry. Most people drink them young but many will age happily for ten years or perhaps more. The best areas are generally the Clare Valley and the Eden Valley in South Australia. The Clare wines are cleaner and edgier than those from the Eden Valley which are softer and creamier; generally lower altitude. Margaret River in Western Australia and Hilltops/Orange in New South Wales are trying hard to catch up. 2012 is a great vintage for riesling from the Clare. Jim Barry produces three rieslings, the Watervale (a sub-region within the Clare) here at AU$13, the Lodge Hill at AU$18 and the Florita at AU$35. The 2012 Watervale is my go to wine for lazy summer Sundays. The Florita comes into its own once it has had eight years in the bottle. Other recommended Clare riesling makers are Groset especially their Polish Hill River (another sub-region), Skillogalee, Paulett and Kilikanoon. Another to mention is Crawford River in Henty, Victoria. These wine makers produce wines that are great young but will age beautifully, much like semillon from the New South Wales Hunter Valley. 798700lhonor Just did the New York Tasting, (New York drinks NY) and have to agree with JTWINE Geek, NY is coming on with some killer Riesling...just yummy and clean and delightful! Some standouts were from Anthony Road, ( esp. Artist Riesling),,Red Newt,(ESP. Sawmill creek), Sheldrake Point, (their ICE WINE was ridiculous!) ...I also love Craggy Range's Riesling from New Zealand,( super juicy) and from Columbia, WA; Armin Diel's Poet's Leap and every day sipper, Ravenna. Ok, now I'm thirsty!! Come grab Arnold Waldstien and grab the boat to SI and come visit my shop someone fine summer nite!
