1 Viña Pedrosa Crianza (2009)
Comments: Powerful aromas of ink, oak, violets, medicinal herbs and dried plummy fruits greet the nose with hints of peppery spice and a leathery edge. Powerful and dense in the mouth, this has already developed a rather supple texture, though with plenty of tannic heft still filling the mouth. The spice notes, subtly floral and medicinal toned emerge early on the palate followed by carob laced dried cherry and plum fruit. Those supple tannins build up on the backend where the flavors turn more leather and cooked beefy toned. A little blueberry fruit emerges on the palate with some air, and helps add freshness to the finish which is broad, powerful and dark. Nuanced oak adds a nutty tone here but otherwise is fully absorbed by this rich, powerful wine. with air this gains a lovely smooth, juicy, and yet slightly viscous texture in the mouth. World class and while great today this has another 5-8 years of life. Great Crianza. 92pts

2 Vizcarra Ribera del Duero Senda del Oro (2012)
Comments: Dark, focused and complex on the nose with aromas of tart plum and black raspberry joined by nuanced violet, macerated herb, and earthy licorice aromas. Youthfully tense in the mouth, this sits a bit low on the tongue, showing restrained power with a chewy mouthful of earthy dark plum skin, black cherry and mineral flavors. Almost a bit salty on the tongue, this is a muscular yet well balanced style with real finesse emerging on the backend. The flavors are well delicated here and the tannins very well managed, joining juicy, bright acids on the long finish where this really shines. I might want a little more nuance on the palate but this has fresh, somewhat complex fruit and a gorgeous texture that is both fresh and firm without being rustic. This could use a year or two in bottle before drinking, and then should be great for another 5 or so years. 90pts

3 Alejandro Fernandez Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Crianza (2007)
Comments: Funky and leathery, and with a bit of ass in the glass this smells great. Sure it’s going to be a polarizing wine but life would suck without wines that smell like this in the mix. There’s surprising freshness here as well with smoke and coffee accents framing a core of spicy blackberry and almost strawberry toned fruit that picks up hints of chinese five spice and soy in the glass. Medium light bodied on entry, light and elegant in the mouth. The tannins here have melted away but this remains fresh and surprisingly pretty in the mouth with lovely bitter, wild cherry accented fruit that shows a bit of a beefy edge. The tannins do build in the mouth, nicely balanced by tart acids that bring out the sour plumy fruit on the palate. The finish is driven by ink and mineral flavors with a hint of wild blueberry on the finale. This is at early peak and is delicious today, having retained tons of fresh fruit and gained nuance and textural harmony with age. It’s a surprisingly delicate and somewhat refined Ribera, though it retains the powerful tannins these wines are known for. 90pts

4 Mibal Tinto Ribera del Duero (2011)
Comments: Very floral and a bit stinky on the nose with some slightly signs of reduction. Vigorous swirling helps clear the nose revealing a little passion fruit framed black fruit with notes of gravel, pomegranate seeds and dried beef adding nuance. Fairly large scaled one entry, this shows a fine blend of polish and perfume in the mouth. Still a touch rigid if not surtic, there’s a nice brightness to the fruit here and real power to it across the backend of the palate where this gains lots of almost chewy depth and vivid perfumes of blue flowers and fruit with that spicy passion fruit pomegranate note found on the nose. A nice burst of minerality emerges on the moderately long finish. This is a bit young today but should prove to be terrific with another year of age on it. 89pts

5 Valdubón Ribera del Duero Cosecha (2012)
Comments: Dark violet, blueberry and earthy black plummy fruit greets the nose along with streaks of licorice and medicinal spice. Tight, focused and just a bit tart on entry, this open nicely on the palate featuring soft, almost plush fruit underpinned with firm, slight rustic tannins. There’s some nice fruit here, blueberry and plum toned, but the emerging savory nuance adds attractive complexity. It’s a pretty well behaved wine showing a hint of sophistication yet retaining the rugged character of Ribera. 88pts

6 Ribera del Duero Torremoron (2012)
Comments: Beautiful on the nose with violet and chocolate accents framing bright, slightly wild huckleberry and blackberry fruit underlane with some smoky mineral accents. Zesty on entry and edgy with youthful freshness, this delivers a mouth filling, slightly spice palate full of wild blueberry, black cherry, and blackberry fruit. there’s a nice edge to the tannins, but they really aren’t intrusive and while this is a pretty fruity style of wine it’s structured and firm with great length and surprising minerality on the fairly long finish. Fun to drink and a lovely wine for a BBQ. 87pts
