Top Five Sauvignon Blanc Wines

Rank Wine Rating Price
1 La Petite Perriere Vin de France Sauvignon Blanc (2010)
Comments: There’s a faint woodsy quality here on the nose under layers of lemon oil, lime leaf, and some floral and mineral top notes. Broad on entry, this offers up a fairly mineral-driven palate that has some soft fat around the edge but remains tense and lean at its core. The flavors tend toward the unripe peachy end of the spectrum with a spritz of citrus and some slight chemical mineral accents. The modest finish is fresh with lemon zest and a bit of stone. 85pts

2 Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc Constantia (2010)
Comments: This has rather deep roasted chili notes with a touch of cut grass over fresh pineapple and peach fruit. This is a bit simple in the mouth, though the acid is vibrant. The fruit is a touch towards the overripe tropical end of the spectrum with notes of papaya and mango on the palate, leading to a brisk, slightly short finish. 86pts

3 Rutherford Hill Winery Sauvignon Blanc (2010)
Comments: Nicely balanced on the nose with peach and mineral notes, topped by gentle herbal and floral tones. Zesty and nicely focused in the mouth, this appears a little lean at first but has lovely depth of flavors and a concentrated, if focused, core of peachy fruit. There’s a hint of powder tannin that adds a little peach skin here and complicating notes of pineapple and green plum emerge on the back end. The finish is fairly long and zesty, yet with a nice layer of fruit that keeps the acid balanced. Light and fresh with a nice blend of both warm and cool climate traits. 88pts

4 Pascal Jolivet Sancerre Blanc (2010)
Comments: Quite a piercing nose with some floral top notes, followed by quartzy mineral elements, a touch of unripe peach and some lightly tropical citrus fruit elements. Wonderfully balanced in the mouth, this has solid acidity and a thin layer of baby fat from ripeness all covering just unripe stone fruit and stony flavors. The back end really gets in a mineral groove that drives the moderately long finish. There’s plenty of acid here but it remains well covered until the finale when it pops with some lemony, faintly woodsy fruit. 89pts

5 Terlano Sauvignon Blanc Winkl (2010)
Comments: Intensely herbal on the nose with fresh green over exotic fruit notes of passionfruit, kiwi and gooseberry. Ripping acidity on entry braces the palate and supports flavors of fresh cut grass and citrus fruits with a soft tropical top note. This exhibits excellent balance with an elegant, yet tense, feel and a moderately long, succulent finish. 91pts
