1 Pinot Nero A. Adige DOC Hofstatter Barthenau S. Urbano (2009)
Comments: Floral with stemmy base notes then smoky with a hint of honey, some earthiness and a nice gentle sandlewood accent over lightly burnished red cherry fruit. On entry this is supple, elegant and brightly fruited with a bit of stemmy wood sticking out a bit. The finish is long and elegant with bright acids adding cut to the burnished raspberry fruit and this picks up some spice on the backend. Sappy and deep with a penetrating, extract rich intensity on the backend and the finish, this is very young and warrants cellaring for another few years or decanting for several hours. 93pts

2 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Pinot Nero St. Daniel (2009)
Comments: Smoky oak, tea, earth, and red currant fruit all come together on the very deep nose. On entry this is rather elegant and transparent with wonderful purity to the sapid red currant and lingonberry fruit. This has a delightful combination of density without weight. Air brings out a very fine hint of wood here, adding a light toastiness, and some nutty elements to the palate. Big wild cherry fruit pops on the backend giving way to a long, plump finish rich with pure Pinot fruit and an edge of watermelon. 92pts

3 Tiefenbrunner Pinot Nero Linticlarus Riserva (2009)
Comments: A hint of beef blood greets the nose along with faintly candied red raspberry and wild strawberry notes and a whisper of vanilla with a faint and very attractive carob/ vegetal/ arugula note. This shows superb integration in the mouth, succulent acidity, super fine tannins, elegant and yet powerful with super clear fresh and pure berry fruit. This remains elegantly wrought with a bit of wood popping on the backend and adding complexity to the long finish, raspberries with a hint of tea, with a hint of warmth on the finale. 92pts

4 Manincor Mason Pinot Nero (2010)
Comments: Lightly floral on the nose with red currant fruit, a hint of nutty, smoky wood, a hint of game, with wonderfully woodsy edged fruit, On entry this is bright with juicy acids lending and edginess to the texture but everything is covered with nice flesh, a thin layer but enough to soften this very clear and very transparent wine with raspberry fruit on the palate. The fine purity of fruit and excellent cut here persist on the long finish. This is really superb if on the simple side but with such blazingly pure fruit who cares? 91pts

5 Castelfeder Burgum Novum Pinot Nero (2009)
Comments: Candied cherry, soil, and smoke offer up plenty of complexity on the nose along with lots of spicy base notes. This is rather light on the palate in an elegant and refined style with excellent clarity to the fruit. There’s a light hint of herb in the mouth with some subtle wood spice picking up the backend all supporting gentle red currant and raspberry fruit with a hint of spice and a long mineral finale This is a bit soft on the palate with a streak of creaminess that leads into an elegant finish. 90pts

6 Caldaro Saltner Pinot Nero (2010)
Comments: Lovely small berry nose with a hint of new oak and some very fine soil notes. This shows plenty of sweet fruit, watermelon, wild strawberry, a hint of dark cherry on entry, in fact, this is very fruit driven though with nice balance. There is decent structure here but the structure is fully integrated, very. The lean finish, shows a hint of wood, cherry stones, with nice spice on the finale. This is really a nice blend of fruitiness and structure and should prove to be a crowd pleaser. 90pts

7 St. Michael Eppan Sanct Valentin Pinot Nero (2009)
Comments: Sweet berry fruit on the nose gains a little smoky edge with a little spicy, tight sandalwood note and a bit of vanilla. Round and lush in the mouth with lots of red cherry fruit, and some herbs and mineral accents. This shows off nice weight and firmness in the mouth though it seems a bit light. The nice, dry finish is firm, slightly spicy and woodsy with red currant and raspberry fruit that drifts off with a wisp of smoke on the finale. 90pts
