Top 5 Barbera (My top picks from recent releases)

Barbera, a wine that's great at the table or for summer sipping. At its best, it's a fresh and berry laden wine with brisk acidity that pairs great with foods from the grill, vegetables, red sauces and, of course, pizza. However, there's a lot of Barbera to choose from and they are not all created equal. After tasting over thirty new releases, I came up with my top five picks. Each are well worth their tariff. Enjoy.

The very attractive nose showed spiced berries, herbs and leather. On the palate, it was intense yet silky, with tart berries and spice, softening acidity, and excellent balance. The finish was lingering with dark fruits, not long but very smooth.

154660zinfandel1 Eric Do you think Barbera from California are at the same level as the Italian Barbera.? An example of a California Barbera that I enjoyed came from Uvaggio Winery which I thought was pretty good.
640513Anna Savino I don't think it is a matter of "same level". Barbera changes a lot by adapting to its terroir so it totally changes. The California Barberas that I have tried are from Amador Valley and the mountain AVAs and they were completely different. Fuller bodied, less acid but still very good. Obviously my palate is used to Barberas D'Asti, and Alba so I prefer the acidity here. Keep trying some more and let us know!

640513Anna Savino If you ever get a chance try Vajra Barbera Superiore 2008 or 2009 ... it is a berry nectar! amazing! Now I am drinking Burlotto Barbera which is pretty damn good too! :) cin cin
92549Eric Guido yes, i've had the Vajra and I love it. I just wish it was easier to find. I'm also a huge fan of their Nebbiolo.
