Top 4 Domestic Red Blends tasted 7/2014

2. Deadbolt Red Winemaker's Blend (2011)

« Prev Next » 2 of 4
Average price: $16.84 from 1 store
An unspecified blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah Sweet blackberry fruit and boysenberry aromas greet the nose along with some rather sweet cedary spice and cracked black pepper top notes. Sweet on entry but not terribly so and with less weight and a smidge more acid than many of these wines. this is actually fairly light on the palate with lots of zinberry fruit and black currant flavors. The edge of bramble leads to the finish which is a bit short, and shows the sweetness with some cafe au lait edges, but wraps up with fine grained tannins and some jammy black currant notes. About as sweet as is typical of these wines but this one is lighter on its feet and more elegant than most. 87pts

  • 381013Stallion Geyser Peak Unsnsored Red ia a fantastic Red Blend that actually has some substance to it. Usually goes for around $12 and is well worth the effort of finding! It's a blend of about 8 different varietals.

  • 70577rockinrobin Ste Chapelle Chateau Series NV Soft Red - strawberry, blackberry and cassis note on the nose and palate. Natural acidity balances the sweetness and leads to hints of licorice on the finish. One of the Snake River Idaho AVA's most popular reds at 11.7 % alcohol - Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc and Syrah. At $10 it reminds me of an Italian Lambrusca gone flat. Easy to drink - a 'beginner red wine' pairs well with light cheeses and chicken dishes. Probably available in most major wine markets or was when Constellation owned it - now owned by Precept - Maureen Johnson, winemaker!

  • 1501508mcc010 I'm not a "real" wine connoisseur. My problem may be that I haven't eaten the right varieties of blackberries, cherries, plums, raspberries, etc. or sniffed the right flowers to appreciate the wine descriptions and notes. One California red wine that I've enjoyed is Mustang Red. It's produced by Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I believe most of the grapes are grown on university property north of San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California. Another California red wine that I liked is American River Red. It's produced by Lava Cap Winery in the Apple Hill area just north of Placerville, El Dorado, California.

  • 370653mennos Would you put Apothic Red in this same category?

  • 1511348Wine Hounds Please list state and region for these. I think St Chappelle is Idaho.
