Tasty Wines for Autumn

1 Oberbergen Pinot Noir (2008)
Comments: On the lighter side of medium-bodied, this German Pinot Noir has nice, tart cherry fruit with undertones of sweet spices - perfect as the weather starts to chill. Roasted chicken with carrots, onions, and perhaps butternut squash, anyone?

2 Domaine des Terres Dorees Jean-Paul Brun Moulin-a-Vent (2010)
Comments: A little young, but still nice after decanting. Raspberry, cherry, and berry notes, with a slight savory note to the palate, along with bright acidity and some moderate tannins. Pretty and easy to drink.

3 Verget Macon-Vergisson la Roche (2008)
Comments: Medium-bodied, with richly concentrated flavors of ripe apple, stone fruits, spice, and a touch of vanilla. The acidity is still quite refreshing - a very nice, affordable little white from Macon. Delicious with pork or a meaty white fish.

4 Bodegas Luberri Rioja Biga (2007)
Comments: Medium-bodied, with red and dark fruits, savory spice, and pleasant earthiness. A very easy to drink Rioja, that plays very well with food because of its balance of bright fruit and acid. I'd love it with burgers or lamb kabobs.
Average price: $21.99 from 10 stores

5 Karl Erbes Riesling Spätlese Ürziger Würzgarten (2009)
Comments: A lovely nose of flowers, overripe peaches, and honey. The palate is concentrated, with pleasant sweetness and bright acid. Perhaps a partner for some fall appetizers like bacon-wrapped figs or chicken liver pate with fruit preserves.
