6. Schug Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (2010)

Sweet wild berry and wild strawberry aromas are joined by hints of smoke and herb stem. This is a light-bodied, picnic style wine with small tannins and a hint of iron on the palate, which shows a fine peppery edge to the core of cherry and strawberry fruit. Easy going, with a nice finish that shows some earthy, forest floor complexity and a little minerality on the finale. 87 points

  • 451405annwrite Totally agree about Porter Creek...one of my favorite wineries. Their Carignane is wonderful, too. What about Mounts Winery and Thomas George (who took over the David Bruce property)? Great list.

  • 89065Gregory Dal Piaz Thanks. I'll have to add visits to Mounts and Thomas George to my next visits out there so that i can report back!

  • 451405annwrite I love Copain Winery, too, in Sonoma County for Pinots and Michel Schlumberger. Cheers to your next trip!

  • 541617CarlJBonura I have been to Sonoma many times and have celebrated their Pinot Noir but except for Schug, I have not tasted any of these PNs. Wow, I have missed so many good ones, it seems! I agree with Annwrite that Copain wines are quite good and Thomas George, too. One of my favorite PN wineries is MacPhail. They used to be exclusively PN producers and everything I tasted was outstanding. Another recent PN discovery was from Kokomo Winery. Their 2008 Peter's Vineyard and the Gopher Hill PN are very good representations of the restrained approach to these wines. Salute`!

  • 89065Gregory Dal Piaz MacPhail is great but boy are the wines hard to find over here on the East Coast!

  • 541617CarlJBonura Not in the stores here on the South Coast, either. But I do order directly from time to time.
