Que Syrah Shiraz

Syrah, what an enigmatic grape.  I find myself describing great Syrahs with the word "beautiful."  Maybe it's the multifacitedness that they can bring, or the pure depth one can find.  Whatever it is, this grape deserves your interest and affection.  From Barossa to Sonoma, from Yakima to the Rhone, great Syrahs (Shirazes for the Aussies) can be found and at a very nice price due to the inexplicable neglect Syrah has seen in recent years.  I love this grape, and if you are at all thinking that you might be stuck in a Cabernet rut (we've all been there) maybe this can be your next great grape discovery.

1 Château Tanunda Grand Barossa Classic Crisp Dry White (2008)
Comments: Big bursts of red and black fruits and oak on the nose. The palette has black raspberry jam, clove, and black pepper with a touch of baking chocolate on the finish. Intense is the word for this wine.

2 Kestrel "Falcon Series" Syrah Yakima Valley (2007)
Comments: Kestrel's wines seem to always come off as hard to beat values, no wine more so than this. The wine is soft, with plenty of fruit from red to blue to black. There's a hint of leather and black pepper but not too much. Anyone looking to break into Syrah would be hard pressed to find a better Intro wine.

3 Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Barossa Valley William Randell (2006)
Comments: This wine shows the great potential of Australian Shiraz. The nose is quite aromatic with chocolate, holiday spices, and cassis. The pallette is rich and unctuous with mocha, blackberry, baking chocolate and pepper. Very long finish. Silky smooth tannins.

4 Stevens Syrah Yakima Valley Black Tongue (2008)
Comments: Hope you like massive structure (I do) because this wine has it! The wine has plenty of deep, rich, dark fruit but this wine is really about the tar, smoke, licorice and pepper. Those that love very fruity Syrahs should stay away, this is quite dry.
Average price: $34.99 from 6 stores

5 Jemrose Syrah "Cardiac Hill" Bennett Valley Sonoma (2007)
Comments: A wonderful Syrah from an under-appreciated region. Deep black and blue fruits on the nose along with clove, black pepper and smoke. The palate is concentrated with some nice earthy notes coming through with blackberry pie and pencil lead.

6 Domaine Duclaux Chateauneuf-du-Pape (2009)
Comments: Deep and opulent fruit, boysenberries and plums with spice and beautiful black tea. Nicely balanced with a very long finish.

7 Calcareous Syrah Paso Robles (2008)
Comments: Deep purple with aromas of plums, black cherries, and boysenberry, with a touch of vanilla oak. The palate is dense and opulent, almost creamy. Tannins are quite firm but are balanced by the immensely concentrated fruit. Other flavors detected include cocoa, allspice, and smoked meat.

8 Argot the Opening Salvo Bennett Valley (2008)
Comments: Wow. There isn't much more that needs to be said about this wine. A truly masterful Syrah. Gobs of black cherry, black and blueberry, clove, cinnamon, tobacco, black pepper, cocoa, earth...it goes on and on. Nearly perfect balance and a finish that seems to last forever.
