New Zealand Syrah 2012

Rank Wine Rating Price
1 Ash Ridge Syrah/Viognier (2009)
Comments: Very floral, seems like more than the noted 2% Viognier, though there is also a fair amount of aromatic wood here. Broad and a bit soft in the mouth, with nice fruit and spice leaning more to juniper than pepper. With a stony base, moderately lightweight and really fresh fruit flavors of blackberry and huckleberry, this is refreshing right through the sapid finish. 87pts

2 Mission Estate Winery Syrah Hawkes Bay (2009)
Comments: Toasty, cocoa, white pepper and pretty clear wild raspberry and redcurrant fruit aromas on the nose here. Cool and tense on entry with a fine elegant and fresh feel. This is really transparent with gentle meatiness backed up by soft berry fruit. Tannins here are really fine, ripe, small yet tense, though a bit more flavor intensity wouldn’t hurt. This seems a touch closed, but I can see this peaking early. It’s a bit short and a bit raw on the finish. 88pts

3 Sacred Hill Hawkes Bay Syrah (2010)
Comments: Ripe, low and quite minty, this is herbal on the nose with white and black pepper, a little beef and a stony edge. It is broad though dry in the mouth with weighty extract of black cherry pit fruit. This lacks a touch of vibrancy, but does have lovely flavor. It’s dry and firm with savory beefy notes, mineral edges and cool blueberry than turns aromatic and floral on the finish. 88pts

4 Church Road Syrah Hawkes Bay Reserve (2008)
Comments: Ripe, powerful and dark on the nose with plenty of juniper, game, truffle, herb, oak and mint aromas over light wild blackberry fruit. On entry, this is rich and broad shouldered. A bit loose perhaps, but with a bold core of sweet ripe fruit that shows fine savoriness. Deep and woodsy, retaining a dried herb character on the long finish. This offers up huge dry extract and fairly reeks of violet. There is a lot to like, it just seems a little heavy-handed. 89pts

5 Elephant Hill Syrah (2008)
Comments: All fresh and balanced with violets and coconut accents, a nice cracked pepper vein and accent notes of stemmy floral, truffle, herb and oak. This is dry and firm, and almost austere on entry with a deep meatiness to the palate. Weighty but light as well, with transparent savory flavor of meat juices, black truffle, pepper and juniper. Long with gentle blackberry, black cherry fruit. Finishes with great plummy notes and good clarity leading to a spicy finale. Lacks just a touch of intensity but eminently drinkable! 90pts

6 Trinity Hill Syrah Hawkes Bay Homage (2010)
Comments: Lots of Viognier on the nose (5% Viognier in the blend). Very perfumed with just a touch of game and blueberry. Tight with a little white pepper and muscular wild berry fruit. Firm and dry, and almost austere, but packed with dry extract. Deep and savory, a bit inky but with juniper, game and huckleberry. Tight and focused on the finish, this is a big, dense wine but elegant and so well balanced, with room to improve. I love the texture of the tannins here. 90pts

7 Craggy Range Syrah le Sol (2009)
Comments: Intensely aromatic and floral, with plenty of wood spice, green anise seed and black fruit. Violets, earth and cured meat are rich and ripe with fine depth. This has savory, fresh blackberry fruit, spicy, sappy herb notes on the back end, palate-staining tenacity of fruit, with fine length, fine balance, and ripe tannins. This finishes with uprising brightness of flavor, let's see what three years brings. 92pts

8 Trinity Hill Homage Syrah (2010)
Comments: Venison, black pepper and violet pastille all come together on the precise and deep nose. Lots of gamy fruit on entry which has a super refined, elegant feel. Almost supple yet tense, with great cut to the wild raspberry fruit. This is really elegant, if totally in a New World style, with bright, very pure and aromatic boysenberry and white pepper all over the finish. 93pts

9 Trinity Hill Homage Syrah (2009)
Comments: Tea, herb and a touch of stem on the nose, dark and slightly brooding with crushed berry fruit, violet pastille, bacon, game and a little black truffle. Very subdued early on, yet seamless with its dark, earthy, truffley entry. Some cocoa notes and a really meaty core with refined tannins, bright acids, and subtle spice notes arrive on the back end, with a bit of stemmy herb and black pepper accenting rich fruit on the elegant finish. Real power, iron fist velvet glove kind of wine. 93pts
