Rank Wine Rating Price
1 Miolo Lote 43 (2008)
Comments: Black olive, black currant, buried French oak, a hint of truffle, tight but focused with a bit of violet floral extract on the nose, a beefiness to the nose, cedary pencil shavings, a bit soft up front but there is enough acidity here, it is packed with fairly fresh fruit a touch brambly, black spiced plum toned with some black cherry and very lightly herbal notes on the midpalate along with integrated but obvious cedary oak notes. Quite tannic on the finish and blocky in the mouth but at the same time this is kind of fresh, smooth, this seems like it has all the pieces to evolve positively with some lovely fruit peeking out but a whole lot of blackness here as well, shows a hint of pepperiness on the finish. as well 91pts 50% Cabernet Sauvignon/50% Merlot

2 Quinta Do Seival Alvarinho (2011)
Comments: 30 days in first passage in new barrique, battonage every day, Very aromatic, huge pithy nose, huge tangerine, grapefruit, and mango tinged nose, very floral as well, wood spice comes out with air, rich entry, round, tons of tangerine and grapes ruin fruit on the palate the aromatics does a good job of covering up the wood spice, This has a roundness from the wood, a bIt soft for Alvarinho, but this fairly explodes on the finish with aromatic tangerine an grapefruit fruit built on a mild base of wood spice, long finish wood comes out as the wine warms up, a wine that will wow people at tastings, but not really my style. 91pts

3 Miolo Rar Pinot Noir (2010)
Comments: 50% of the wine passes through French barrique for six months, new wood Fine French oak nose, small red berry fruits, a bit dark toned, black fruit, black spice, air brings out some. More wild berry aromas, powerful Pinot a touch blocky but rather elegant and refined given the power this shows, a lovely bright sapid red fruit nose early on the palate which is followed by light floral and slightly herbal elements adding complexity and depth. Rather blueberry toned on the backend and through the finish, which shows some woody tannin and finishes with notable licorice and vanilla ice top notes. This is modern styled and well done. 90pts

4 Miolo Rar Reserva de Familia (2010)
Comments: Leather, a bit of body odor, a touch of coffee cream, spiced plum and black cherry fruit with lithe soil and herb top notes. Depp complex and rather elegant, rich and powerful on entry delivering deep wild plum fruit framed with subtle oak spice, violets and a flourish of gamy herbs, the tannins are very soft and the acidity bright but integrated, the wood tannins become a bit aggressive on the backend, but balance out on the finish which does have enough fruit to buffer the dryness of the tannins, the fruit is quite aromatic here, powerful yet clear with a soil toned finish that is long and ends on a strawberry note 90pts

5 Miolo Merlot Terroir Brasilien Val Dos Vinhedos Merlot Gsm/Sgm/Smg Miolo Wine Group (2008)
Comments: Crazy intense mulberry jam, nose, oaky for sure, very ripe fruit, over ripe, balsamic, intense almost minty, licorice spiced fruit that has a blackberry ice cream quality to it with nutty, pistachio like top notes and plenty of wood veneer, deep and matte on the palate, soft, broad with heavy dark cherry fruit, black plum edges, bitter cocoa framing notes and a bit of a hollow middle. This is rich and frankly a bit dense but also a bit closed today. Black, tight and short on the finish with lots of fruit tannins shutting things down and some wood tannins turning splintery on the palate. This needs plenty of time and is packed with potential. 90pts
