Josetta Saffirio tasted May 2013

2. Alna Rosso Langhe. Josetta Saffirio (2010)

« Prev Next » 2 of 9
Merlot was commonly planted in the Langhe prior to WWII, so when faced with a plot that wasn’t suitable for either Nebbiolo or Barbera the family chose to plant Merlot, they do not grow Dolcetto. This was intended to be their entry level wine, something softer and easy drinking but it has proven to be very challenging to sell and may be discontinued. Slightly stemmy, earthy and focused on the nose with framing notes of oak, mint and a little chalk. This shows the freshness and crispness of a cool vintage. A touch low acid on entry, though this comes together fairly nicely in the mouth. A lean little merlot with some modest if dry tannins and a light layer of fudge under black currant and herb flavors. Rather firm and drying on the finish, this could improve with time though this seems a little fundamentally stern though in an elegant way.If I wasn’t in a Piedmontese mindset this might very well prove to be more attractive. 86pts
