Rank Wine Rating Price
1 Millbrook Winery Tocai (2011)
Comments: Nicely aromatic with notes of tree bark, herb and a hint of minty spice accenting the pear and white peach fruit. A lot of trapped CO2 here lends this a bit of a spritz on the palate. Nice, fairly rich feel in the mouth, this has classic bitter apple, pear, almond and subtle herb flavors. The acid is bright but well integrated lending this a large yet clear impression in the mouth. Delicious pear and bitter herb stem flavors on the finish end with a spark of earthy minerality. Wow, this is really good. 91pts

2 Whitecliff Vineyard Chardonnay Hudson River (2010)
Comments: Nicely gentle on the nose with a subtle complexity married to fine freshness. Notes of apple, apple skin, orange, herb and lime great the nose with support from a very gentle shading of oak. This is very bright in the mouth. It explodes in lightweight vibrancy with big acids that stretch out the apple, herb and slightly earthy flavors on the palate before showering fresh citrus fruits on the moderately long finish. Perhaps not terribly complex, this is succulent, balanced and just terrific. 91pts

3 Benmarl Reserve Chardonnay (2010)
Comments: Nutty and slightly oak-driven on the nose but there is a very nice, sweet peach undercurrent to the aromatics. This is a touch sweet upfront but super acids roll in, snapping this to attention with finely focused apple, apricot and faintly orange rind toned flavors. The oak is very well integrated, adding a touch of roundness and a slightly creamy edge while contributing some spice on the back end. The finish is a bit short, nutty and more oak-driven than the palate, with more creamy orange rind flavors. This is really lovely, fresh, bright and crisp with fine balance. Very nicely done. 90pts

4 Millbrook Proprietor's Special Reserve Chardonnay (2010)
Comments: Rather oaky on the nose with slightly dried dark fruits and melon, peach and citrus pith aromas. A little milky and vanilla accented as well. This is pretty well rounded on entry, though it is rich and very finely balanced. There’s fine ripe fruit here. Peach, orange and vanilla flavors are all underpinned by a nice base of wood spice. Creamy and smooth, this shows fine length and a certain elegance though the sweetness from the wood and vanilla imprint are quite pronounced. 89pts

5 Tousey Chardonnay (2010)
Comments: Lots of tropical fruit on the nose, creamy with lime and hints of guava and papaya, accented with some allspice oak tones. Tense in the mouth, this is rather focused and very well defined with lime and pineapple flavors covering a touch of wood sweetness and a topped with a hint of oak. The palate is a bit more straightforward than the nose though air does draw out some tropical fruit. The finish is a bit grippy and brief with a nice refreshing wash of acid followed by some creamy pineapple notes. 87pts

6 Brotherhood Chardonnay Premium Selection (2010)
Comments: A bit fruity on the nose with creamy lemon verbena, pear and lime notes framed with some simple wood spice. Lots of musky citrus fruits, citron and lime on the nose. A round, soft expression of Chardonnay. Though there is no shortage of acid here, it still is rather lush and sweetly fruity. Lots of citrussy fruit with a slight dip on the palate before the back end turns cream and lime-sicle toned on the fairly long finish. Very popularly styled 85pts

7 Benmarl Winery Seyval Blanc (2010)
Comments: Fairly earthy on the nose with some wheatgrass notes over steely mineral, a hint of melon and notes of baked peach. Bright and fresh on entry, this is rather exuberantly styled with bright acidity and a nice medium-bodied feel that supports lime-sicle flavors backed up with a touch of melon. Fresh and fruity. Better on the palate than the nose, but this is fun and refreshing. 84pts

8 Hudson-Chatham Seyval Blanc Hudson River (2010)
Comments: A little toasty on the nose with some licorice and hawthorn aromas over modest melon and pear fruit. This is very bright with huge acids up front lending this a really juicy feel. Light-bodied and fresh, this delivers clear, clean flavors of watermelon rind, lime and slightly pineapple-like fruit flavors. The finish is refreshing in a very limeade way. This finishes much better than it starts. A nice, fresh wine for a very hot day! 84pts
