1 Ancient Peaks Red Blend Paso Robles Renegade Margarita Vineyard (2009)
Comments: This is why I drink wine. In between every 50-100 or so wines that I sample, one stands out like a flash of light. The nose on the Renegade is an addictive blend of dark fruit, toast, and tobacco, with intense earthy complexity in the palate. The length is there, with a subtle strawberry fruit finish. This probably sounds like every one of my other tasting notes, but the balance on this one is so perfect, that it really blew me away. Very drinkable, great complexity. It elevated my senses!

2 Xavier Flouret Shiraz Pemberton Waroo (2009)
Comments: Lots of blackberry fruit and chili powder. Nice oakiness on the back end of the aroma. Attack is hot and packs good tannins. Slight jamminess on the finish, not sweet. It's an exciting wine, containing the usual pepperiness of Shiraz complemented with really solid fruit.

3 Torbreck Shiraz Barossa Valley Woodcutter's (2005)
Comments: Huge marshmallow nose with mildly smoked oak, notes of sawdust, very big pear/melon fruits. The mouth is very thick, with noticeable sugars and sediment, that evokes chocolate-covered strawberries and all that christmas-morning joyfulness. The combination of the nose and the attack is really fun.

4 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette (2003)
Comments: I feel like this wine loves me, and for good reason! No, not really. A perfectly balanced montage of every flavor that I love, a little gamey, vanilla, blackberry, mint, oak, swiss cheese, rosemary, meaty lamb. Many thanks to Gregory for sharing this one.

5 Anaba Red Rhone Blend Sonoma Valley Coriol (2006)
Comments: Really nice blackberry fruit and red spice on the nose, hint of smokiness that tones down a bit after the wine sits. The body is fruit forward, with a solid blend of tannins. I really enjoy the mouthfeel - spicy attack and silky smooth release.

6 Jorian Hill Red Rhone Blend Santa Ynez Valley Beespoke (2008)
Comments: Tons of complexity in the nose - seems to shapeshift with every inhalation. Really well integrated wood notes with cayenne pepper and fresh fruit, a bit of creaminess. The attack is very tart, with a smooth finish.
