Everyday favorites from Piedmonte

When dining in my house on a weekday, it's the wines of piedmonte that are poured at my table.  But unfortunatly, you can't always be drinking Barolo.  This is a list of my favorite house wines from Piedmont.

Rank Wine Rating Price
1 Vietti Barbera d'Alba Tre 10 (2009)
Comments: The nose showed ripe red berries and slight confectionary notes with spice and sawdust. On the palate, it was dark and spicy with a dollop of fresh acidity and soft textures yielding red and black fruits. The finish was dry, showing medicinal cherry and dark chocolate. It was easy to drink and refreshing.

3 Burlotto G.B. Dolcetto d'Alba (2009)
Comments: As I sat and sniffed around the edges of this glass, it reminded me of everything I love about Italian wine. The first impression was of blackberry jam and brioche, but with time in the glass, the slightest hint of barnyard and earth added dimensions that I had at first not noticed. It was easy on the palate, with perfect balance and flavors of wild berries and a bit of old wood. Some gravelly tannin was noticeable on the finish but it served to remind me that this wasn't just a forgettable wine from who-knows-where, this was Dolcetto from Piedmont and a truly excellent example at that.

4 Vietti-Roero Arneis Italy (2010)
Comments: The nose showed white flowers, a spritz of lime and hints of almond extract. On the palate, I found sweet pear and green apple with crisp acidity that made this wonderfully refreshing. The finish was fresh and light with a bitter hint as it faded away. This is a great white for summer sipping, with a Primavera sauce or white risotto.

5 Gd Vajra Barbera d'Alba (2008)
Comments: The nose showed gorgeous red fruits, earth and stems. On the palate, I experienced intense ripe red berries with hints of cedar, turning to sour cherry on the finish. This wine was so pure and honest, as the quality of the fruit showed through more than anything else.

6 Marziano Abbona Barolo Pressenda (2007)
Comments: The nose was aggressive with ripe cherry and herbal notes. On the palate, it was soft on entry but quickly showed a gruff tannic structure, yet a solid core of rich fruit promises that time will reveal layers of depth.
