1 Jordan Chardonnay (2010)
Comments: Very low key on the nose with complex aromas of buttery nuts, herbs, pineapple tops, older wood, and creamy apple fruit topped with nice toast and creme brulee aromas. Decidedly acid-driven on entry, this delivers wonderfully clear flavors of citrus fruit and tart apples over a base of older wood accented with a hint of toast and vanilla in the mouth. Just wonderfully balanced with intense flavors but a light, elegant mouthfeel capped off by a long, complex and subtle finish. This is lovely; complex yet restrained with amazing acidity for a California Chardonnay. 92pts Acidity: Medium High Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Low Savory Flavors: Medium Low Fruity Flavors: Medium High Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium Low

2 Rodney Strong Chardonnay Chalk Hill Reserve (2009)
Comments: Tight and glossy on the nose with a veneer of nutty oak over light minty and waxy kettle popcorn caramel notes, all flecked with a hint of lemon zest. Super bright and focused on entry with excellent tent pole acidity that supports fresh apricot, pineapple and lemon flavors framed with nutty oak and some light, creamy ginger creme brulee notes. Large-scaled but with excellent balance, this remains fresh and vivid in the mouth and finishes with a lovely clear citrus and lightly toasty oaky finale that has a touch of the mintiness I found on the nose. 92pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium

3 Ferrari Carano Chardonnay Alexander Valley (2010)
Comments: Lightly nutty and quite dry and earthy on the nose with gently aromatic dried apple and preserved citrus fruits layered over vanilla and ginger cream notes. A fine blend of bright acidity and creamy mouthfeel makes this bright and nervous in the mouth. The flavors are complex and broad on the palate with base notes of nuts, dried flowers and a very fine used wood sheen that supports crisp heirloom apple, green plum and dried lime flavors. The finish is long and a bit creamier and sweeter with vanilla notes coming to the fore over the sweet, ripe fruit and gently spicy oak flavors. There's a hint of sweetness that may be off-putting to some here but this is awfully good in this style. 91pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Medium Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium High Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium

4 Rutherford Ranch Chardonnay (2011)
Comments: Very fine and focused on the nose with notes of apple butter, pear and lime leaf over gently nutty and toasty oak with vanilla and floral highlights. Lightweight, clean and fresh in the mouth with lovely lemon juice acidity driving right through the palate here. The flavors of apple, smoked nuts and pithy lime are clear and vivid in the mouth, fading rather quickly on the modest finish. Zesty and fun to drink with a light and savory heirloom apple note developing with air. The finish fleshes out with additional air, so this might need a little time to show it's best. 88pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium High Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium

5 Kenwood Vineyards Sonoma County Chardonnay (2011)
Comments: Vanilla cream, green apple and lime leaf greets the nose along with a touch of golden raisin. A bit tight on entry with a touch of dissolved CO2 adding a bit of a prickle on the palate. Once you get past that this is fairly dry and nicely complex with an earthy streak of apple fruit layered over hints of butter, vanilla, and gentle mineral tones. Really kind of tense and restrained for a wine at this price point, there's a hint of tannin on the finish, which is long and fairly complex. Solid value. 87pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium

6 Glen Ellen House Glen Ellen Reserve Concannon Chardonnay (2011)
Comments: A bit coconutty with classic apple, butter, vanilla and baking spice aromas. Bright and juicy in the mouth with a hint of creamy vanilla flavors framing a simple but fresh core of peach, apple and lemon fruit. There's a hint of something slightly vegetal on the back end that adds some apple core complexity to the fairly long and nicely succulent finish. This is well balanced and fresh and really is a lovely little Chardonnay. Great value. 86pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium Low

7 Freemark Abbey Chardonnay Napa (2011)
Comments: Very aromatic and fruity on the nose with aromas of pineapple, apricot, mango and lime over a base of hazelnut and honeycomb. This fills the mouth with very well-delineated flavors of apple skins, honeycomb and dried lemon flavors in a style that combines assertive acidity and a gentle roundness. Very much in what is called a Burgundian style, the flavors gain a creamy edge on the back end and the almondy oak builds slightly on the moderately long finish. This really wants some food, but is very well-balanced and fun to drink with complex, well-meshed flavors. 91pts Acidity: Medium High Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium High Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium High

8 Franciscan Oakville Estate Chardonnay (2011)
Comments: Fruity yet firm on the nose with lovely pear, apple, and apricot aromas framed with perfumed oak and topped with hints of tobacco and pollen. Vivid and bright on entry with tons of acidity supporting fresh apple, pineapple and under-ripe apricot flavors. There's a hint of creaminess adding some softness on the mid-palate, though the acidity remains rather sharp adding a rich lemon curd note to the back end, which recedes rather quickly on the finish revealing a pithy, dried citrus peel note over hints of almonds and steely minerality. Super value. 89pts Acidity: Medium High Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Savory Flavors: Low Fruity Flavors: Medium High Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium

9 Chappellet Chardonnay Napa Valley (2010)
Comments: Very aromatic with heather top notes over a base of lemon oil, butter, smoky grilled peaches, mango and hickory smoked aromas. Smooth, soft and opulent in the mouth, the low acidity here lends this a sweetness in the mouth that accentuates the ripe flavors of apple, pear and pineapple. Plenty of nutty and honey tones add complexity on the midpalate, with a touch of herbs and some waxiness popping on the moderately long, lemon citrusy finish which shows some heat. 89pts Acidity: Medium Low Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium High

10 Wente Vineyards Chardonnay Riva Ranch Heritage Block (2010)
Comments: Buttery aromas along with pineapple and brown sugar notes lends this a rather desserty nose. With air, more wood spice and sweet apple aromas add complexity. This enters the mouth with a distinctive sweet/tart character and some super-ripe flavors of pineapple, mango and pear. There's a creamy edge here but the assertive acidity balances it out along with the sweetness here, and only really becomes obvious on the finish which is also dry and toasty. A fairly complex, rather large scaled wine at this price point. Not my style but well made in its style. 88pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Medium Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium

11 La Crema 'Sonoma' Chardonnay (2011)
Comments: Tight on the nose with notes of graham crackers and fresh cream over green apple peels and growing spicy wood tones. Tight and slightly minerally on entry, this shows good tension in the mouth with a nice hint of caramel early on the palate, followed by sweet pear and apple fruit all fading into a smooth, gentle, spicy finish. Easy to drink and restrained but not particularly complex or deep. 87pts

12 The Seeker Chardonnay (2010)
Comments: Very citrusy on the nose with lime and lemon notes over a base of pineapple, lightly spicy French oak and a bit of floral lessiness. Pineapple and cream pop on entry in this soft, rather polished example. The acidity is a touch soft, though there are nice steely citrus flavors offering fine balance to the sweet elements on the palate. The finish is taut and tart, showing good focus and pithy citrus flavors. A nice blend of New World texture and Old World flavors. 85pts Acidity: Medium Low Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium

13 Bogle Chardonnay California (2011)
Comments: Sweet on the nose with lots of vanilla cream, coconut and fresh ginger spiciness over light apple fruit. Round and plump in the mouth with soft apricot, green plum and vaguely limey flavors under creamy, soft vanilla spice notes. There's good acidity here, which is well-balanced by the sweet apple fruit which dominates the moderately long, creamy, vanilla-tinged finish. A bit round and fruity for my palate, but there's no denying the appeal here. Cocktail wine. 85pts Acidity: Medium Low Perceived Sweetness: Medium Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium

14 Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay Monterey Santa Barbara (2010)
Comments: Sweet and quite spicy on the nose with heavy pineapple and papaya aromas topped with a bit of caramel and a touch of dried ginger. A bit round and heavy on entry with nice acidity, but dried fruit flavors make this seem a bit dull. The flavors tend towards the dried mango and pineapple end of the spectrum with a juicy pop of lemon on the midpalate and oak influences which are fairly restrained, adding a spicy underlay and framing notes of vanilla through the back end. The finish is simple with lemon juice and egg cream flavors. Serviceable if a bit anonymous. 84pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Savory Flavors: Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium High

15 Mirassou California Chardonnay (2011)
Comments: Big lemon, green apple and slightly foxy grape aromas hit the nose followed by touches of wood spice and tea leaves. Fairly round and creamy, at least creamier than past vintages of this. There's a touch of sweetness supporting juicy green apple, green plum and vanilla flavors. The finish shows a hint of woody bitterness, vanilla, and a touch of heat, but that won't show if this is chilled. 84pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Medium Low Oak: Medium Low Spicy Flavors: Medium Savory Flavors: Low Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium
